Awning Lock
Just got my awning lock today and I was wondering if anybody has put one on a electric awning yet. If so are there any tricks or things to watch before I begin?

I put one on my 3400RL. If I had to do over again I would put a shim between the bracket and the mounting post. I didn't use the shim and it came right to the edge where the roller starts, Here's a picture so you can see what I mean! http://s170.photobucket.com/albums/u...DSC_0015-1.jpg

A lot of us are using the Awning Lock. I don't quite understand the installation problem using a spacer. I installed ours according to the instructions and it didn't require anything else.

Orv,do you have the Elelctric Awning? Look at the picture close and you can see why you would need a spacer,it comes to close to the edge.

Yes without the spacer the hole for the awning lock is right on the edge of the tueb. I have cut a 1/4" piece of nickle plate and put between the lock and plate it came with. Now I will be able to drill the hole where it needs to be put. I will post some pictures of this.

Oops! My bad. I guess I should pay more attention before I begin writing. Thanks for clarifying.

Just curious about these locks; I'm sure they work well but are they really needed?
The reason I ask that is because when the awning is retracted it seems to be self locking where it won't go out unless the directional release lever is switched. Now I'm not saying that something couldn't cause it to switch without you knowing it but under normal operation shouldn't the mechanism in the awning keep it from un-rolling?

Bill, as I understand it, the lock will prevent the unraveling of the awning when the release lever is unknownly switched to open or if the lock mechanism fails. In either case, you won't know anything is wrong until the awning goes sailing. I'm sure that this has happened to some of our members, as I remember reading about awnings opening up as they were driving down the road. Are they needed? I think so, for my own peace of mind. I have one that I will be installing as soon as the weather stays above freezing.

Well it looks like good insurance anyway! Where has everyone been getting the locks at?
Maybe I've seen the thread before but I've always had it in the back of my mind, wondering if it would come un rolled while driving.

I've not had it happen to us. Yet. I've only seen two or three unraveled but it was enough to convince me it can happen. I do not know whether the lock handle was tripped or not. In all cases, the awning unrolled while the arms were still fully attached, upright, to the coach. So strapping those arms doesn't help on this problem although it would keep the arms from falling out should they become unlocked.
I'm seriously considering getting a lock for ours.

Mine as well, on a Keystone Sprinter. I took it apart, the aluminum gear stripped. The wind is a powerful force. I advise everyone to get one.
