Cost difference between gas and diesel fuel!
The difference between regular gasloine and diesel fuel her in New Jersey seems to be widening MORE than normal for the winter. Although NJ has some of the lower overall prices for fuel(gas at $2.43/gallon and diesel at $2.99 per gallon), is this normal AND is this the same across the US?

It flips back and forth depending on supply, oil producers feelings for that day. History has proven that prices go up before holidays, summer vacation, then why can't they set up production to allow for heavy usage? Bill

No not really. Here in Florida diesel is any where from 2.89 to 3.10 but gasoline seems to be holding at about 2.75 to 2.80.
BTW-For those in the Pinellas Park area of Florida or just passing thru on US 19 Wal*Mart has diesel at 2.89 (2.86 with the Wal*Mart card) while most all other stations are at 2.99 to 3.10.

95 percent of the USA, Diesel fuel is used to transport PRODUCT.....to market. The cost of transporting this PRODUCT, is automaticly added to the PRODUCT DELIVERED. The only folk's that suffer are the independent truck drivers and those that use Diesel Fuel, like us. Typically Diesel is only about one step in processing about road oil, so there is no real reason to raise the price of Diesel above unleaded. However this is the only way they can do it with out a National RIOT. All the Soccer Mom's are happy paying the 2.70 a gal for unleaded and not even thinking about the product that has increased on the shelf. Pretty sneaky don't you think.....

Yes the cost of transporting any product is automatically added to the cost. But I’m a little lost as to why there is not a “National Riot” from all of us!!! (Boston Tea Party)
I’m sure that more than 75% of all (County, State & Federal) vehicles are run with diesel fuel, so we are not only paying extra for our diesel fuel we use, we are also paying more in State & Federal “Taxes” to run all of these vehicles’ oh I forgot the cost of food we eat……..
Let us forget about “Soccer Mom’s” being so happy to be paying $2.70- $2.90 a gallon for unleaded. What about the “American People” that set back and say nothing, but I guess we are all rich and this doesn’t have any effect on us?
I could go on, but I’m sure we are content to go on paying because if we are going to (Play we are going to have to Pay)!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gas ... $2.52 / gal at Quicktrips
Diesel ... $3.09 / gal at Quicktrips here in Wichita. I agree it seems the gap is way wider than previous years. Usually about this time of year diesel goes up as the East Coast States start stockpiling fuel oil for the winter which is basically diesel. I have some friends working on mulitstate crews that are building a huge natural gas pipeline from somewhere around Wyoming to terminate somewhere in the Eastern states ... maybe this will reduce the need for stockpiling heating oil in coming years.

John is correct part of the way on diesel, we the folks with everyday driver of diesel fuel pay for the brunt of it. the trucker and or his company are getting two things to help them help, fuel surcharges and rebates from fuel companies. I know for fact because we get fuel rebates where I work at try .10 cents per gallon, so that helps off set diesel as well. But with more and more folks getting them as everyday drivers the fuel companies rack up on you and me that way. Diesel is one of the less refined fuels there is, but cost the most, go figure.

Seems the cheapest gasoline I have seen here is $2.49 per gallon. Most diesel around Aransas Pass is $2.80 to $3.00 per gallon. However, we go to Corpus Christi for banking, and there is a Valero across the street from the bank that has diesel for $2.69. I have been filling the tank and a couple cans when we get over there.

I think that this whole subject is intertwined with the supply/demand equation and is not easily justifiable. Perhaps a good basis for comparison is the energy content of the fuels in question. For example, diesel contains approximately 10% more energy value than gasoline. I don't recall seeing any complaints when diesel is priced lower than gasoline, even though it contains more potential energy value and is probably worth more per gallon.

I think we've shown over the past couple years that although the diesel fuel is $.40 to $.60 higher than gasoline, over the long haul diesel owners come out on top because of the better mpg that the diesel gets over the comparable gasoline engine. I've thought seriously about getting a gas-driven truck but when I sit down and do the math, over all the diesel comes out on top.

I came home from a meeting last night and checked the price of gas/diesel from one end of our small town of Ephrata in central Washington State to the other, about 2 miles.
2.99/3.39
3.01/3.25
3.01/3.45
3.01/3.41
Very interesting numbers as you can sure tell the regular gas is very competitive.

For a number of years, I worked for a major oil company in the refining sector, and it's all about profit. Ask any knowlegeable refinery worker and he'll tell you that the production of a gallon of diesel is about 2/3 the cost of producing a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline....when I worked for the oil company, I liked to see high profits---it meant good raises. Now that I am retired, it sucks...

Fred Meyer has the best prices in Port Orchard, Washington. Diesel is $2.99 and Regular is $2.85. Down the road at the 76 station diesel is $3.49 and reg is $2.85. Winter is getting close and those SOB's want to get the most for heating those homes so it also gets us at the diesel pump. Anybody hear prices around Casa Grand or Arizona City, Arizona as my Family says Reg is around $2.35 but do not know diesel prices.

Yes, this year the winter gap between gas and diesel is in fact wider than in the past... I have found the root cause of this problem..
The oil companies monitor this site and when Rich gave in, they figured the last gas hold out was now converted. Hence, the sudden rise in diesel prices is all Rich's fault..

I read an article a few years back when Diesel and Gas are the same price the break even point on Diesel/Gas is 90,000 miles that took in consideration the up front cost of Deisel engine.
