Skid Wheels

Hello.

I just bought 41' Montana and it tends to bottom out on the rear bumper while going down over some curb drains. Does anyone have any suggestions on skid wheels or other fixes to solve this?

Thanks.

My Montana is about 7 feet shorter than yours, and we have never had an issue with the unit dragging tail. Our previous 26' travel trailer had a pair of skid wheels bolted on to the rear of the I beams. I know of a couple of times they saved the trailer.

I go over some steep entrance and exit cuts as cross ways as I can. Haven't had any real problems so far.

Putting wheels back there could put a lot of stress on the frame if they contact anything. I would find a different way to get where you are going.

Does your rig sit fairly level or are you way nose high? Like others have said, no issue. When hooked up there is a lot of clearance between the rear cap and the ground.

On our rig, there were poor excuses for skids below the rear cap, which we ground halfway off getting into and out of the in-law's property in the mountains south of Yosemite. Last year, I had a welding shop make new skids out of 3/8 inch steel, which I installed where the cheap metal was on our rig. They do not hang any lower than what was there, and we are not now cutting grooves in the pavement when entering the property. I had thought about wheels, but did not want the reduced clearance.

Thanks for all of the responses.

I had a 39 ft. Bighorn before the Montana and no problem with this. I store the rig in offsite storage and it bottoms out going in or out of the entry to the storage lot. I have had the Montana for about a month and will be taking it in to the dealer to see what they suggest and will let everyone know the result.

The Montana rides fairly level, I have a 2015 Dodge 3500 4X4 with air bags. I let the air out of the bags and it still bottomed out.

As a side note, we are very pleased with the Montana.

Well I am the one guy who did have a problem once. The driveway in/out of a gas station was so steep that on the way out I hit the bottom of the ladder and it broke. Needless to say I have never gone back to that particular station and I watch more closely for that same extreme pitch whenever I pull in for fuel. Not gonna bother with the wheels though!

I had to have wheels mounted on the back of mine. I would bottom out even hitting it at an angle. The wheels stick down about 6 inches but they work well, otherwise I would worry about taking out the back of my Montana.

Ours has bottom out one time leaving a very steep driveway in Atlanta but only once.

No problems here, and I have been in some places that I thought I would. I watch very close and pick and choose where I go do to past experience with SOB
