Campgrounds in Ft Walton Beach Area

Hello everyone...looks like Uncle Sam is interested in sending us to Florida for a few years...tough job, but somebody's gotta do it!

We already have reservations for the Navarre Beach CG (based on recommendations from this great site...THANKS!), but are curious if there are any other CGs in the area that you may know of.

We are also checking into the FAMCAMP at Eglin.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Just spent 4 days at Navarre Beach (March 11-15)and Highly recommend it - we'll be back. There was another CG nearby but it wasn't as nice. There are also a few in Destin but they're probably a little pricier as that area tends to be. That being said make sure you visit Buster's Bar and Grill in Sandestin (by Winn Dixie across from Outlet Mall - kind of a dive but Great food! Also be careful if you do an online search as many of the CG listed are way off the coast.

Topsail Hill State Park is in that area and is also very nice. It used to be a private park and has more the feel of private resort park than most State Parks.

Topsail Hill State Park is a beautiful cg. Large, manicured sites. Short ride to beach by tram or bikes. Henderson Beach in Destin is also a very nice cg and right on the beach.

We have stayed at two great campgrounds in that area...

Over on Santa Rosa Island is an old Army fort that has been made into a Federal Park it is "Fort Pickens"

Further on down Emerald Parkway in Destin is "Camping on the Gulf"
This one is expensive but in a great location with a couple dozen sites right on the beach

Ft. Pickens is near the very top of our favorite spots. We first camped there about 45 years ago when it was "Ft. Pickens State Park". We spent a wonderful week there last year. It is now part of the National Seashore. Unfortunately, it was devastated (almost destroyed) by Hurricane Ivan and at last report had still not been opened again.

You also may want to try Hurlbert Field Military Fam-camp. It's on the sound just outside FWB. It's a 20 min ride to Eglins Main gate. Close to Hurlburts Shopping, club etc.
Eglin is so big it depends where your going to be working as you even may be better off staying on the Valparaiso/Crestview side.
Eglin also has a Fam Camp close to their Marina.
The CG run by Maxwell/Gunter is nice it's also on the Choctahatchy (sic) Bay but the commute going to base during rush hours can be brutal.
The army CG in Destin is neat but small and crowded but right in the heart of the Destin area. Your commute to Eglin would be about 35 mins. You'll love the area. Was stationed at Hurlbert many moons ago. Liked it so well I bought a retirement home in Destin. Which I look forward to residing in a few years from now.
Get the Mil Fam Camp book from the BX it is well worth it.

GOOD LUCK!! (ret. AF Civil Engineering)

Thank you all so much for the great tips! Right now we have reservations for "Sun King" in Defuniak...although, we are still trying to get in touch with the FamCamps at both Hurlbert and Eglin. We'll be heading to the area next weekend to shop for a house....so glad we have the trailer for times like this!
