Since day one I've had the bearings repacked every year just prior to heading north in May but the past couple of years we've only towed about 3000 miles between repackings. I'm now thinking that with that amount of mileage it probably isn't necessary every 12 months. We're basically just parked for 6 months south and 6 months north. Any thoughts?

I'm thinking you've come to a rational conclusion ... I imagine the shop that's done the servicing might have withdrawls though! Ha!

I wonder of the value myself. I cannot remember the last time I had my bearings packed in my car or truck and they get much more mileage than the Montana does.

I used to have the wheel bearings repacked and the brakes inspected and replaced, if needed, every year. That was about 15k to 20k miles. The last time it was two years and about 30k miles. I have never had a wheel bearing problem with a fifthwheel. I'll keep doing it this way until I see a reason to change.

Many people do it every year, no matter how few miles it has been pulled, just for their own peace of mind. Peace of mind is a valuable commodity that is worth every ounce of effort it takes to achieve. Once a year I pack the bearings and check the brakes on everything I pull, from the boat trailer, to the equipment trailers. I really dislike breakdowns on the side of the road, and although the can't be completely prevented, they can be minimized.

I do mine every second year. I am a millwright by trade ( industrial mechanic ) Most of the stuff I work on runs 24/7 and the fact of the matter is that most bearings outlive the machines they are mounted on. That is a quote from a manual on bearings that was given to me on my last bearing course and a good example of this is the cars in a junk yard. Most of them have wheel bearings that would run for many more years.
