CANADA CAMPING

Hi Everyone, We will be heading to Canada after the Northeast Rally and need your help. Has anyone camped in Quebec City, Prince Edwards Island or Nova Scotia in Canada? If you have suggestions on where to camp that would be great! Also what to see and do while we are there? We have a 39ft. Monty, I sent off for a brochure for camping in Canada I'm still waiting for it. Any problems crossing the border? We are clueless on what to expect in another country. Thanks for any help you can give us.

You'll need a passport or your birth certificate, not so much for getting into Canada, but getting back into the US. If you have any Fur Kids, you'll need a current Rabies Certificate, some also recommend a current Health Certificate, but we have never encountered that. See you at the Rally, we'll be the oddballs, as we'll should be SOBs by then.

We traveled through New Brunswick and Nova Scotia last summer on our way to Newfoundland and discovered that traveling in those parts of Canada was easy and the folks were all quite friendly. We stayed in Moncton, NB at the Campers City Resort that was quite nice and in Sydney, NS at a KOA that was very nice. We were blasting through those areas so we didn't get a chance to see much but what we saw from the highways was very nice. You need to expect the border agents to go through your Monty but they may not. It seemed like it was a more common practice when returning to the US. The highways were good and the diesel fuel was plentiful so have a great trip. Passports are the best thing to have but birth certificates will work.

To expand on Jim's post. They will run your plates as you pull up and if you are a Registered Gun it may show up, I know ours for New York does and have been questioned about them a few times, but we've never had the search us looking for them, but there is always that chance.

We are prepared to bring passports and our pets information that is required. Thanks to AAA books for Canada. We don't carry firearms. Just wanted more info about camping and an idea of the area first hand. Thanks for all the information so far.

I read somewhere (maybe on this forum?) that special insurance is required for travel in Canada. Is this true? We are considering a trip through Ontario to Niagara Falls. Of course, I'll check it out, but maybe someone here knows.

We've been long aware of this requirement in Mexico, but in the past we've not experienced this in Canada.

We checked with our insurance company Liberty Mutual and we are already covered. I suggest you check with your carrier also to make sure.

No special insurance needed. We spent a few weeks a couple of years back going through some of the same area. In New Brunswick go to Fundy National Park. Full hook ups, great campsites, even better things to see. On Nova Scotia we stayed in Badeck on Cape Breton Island, and did the Cabot trail. Run it without the Monty and run it clockwise for the best views. We took the ferry over to PEI from NS, with the rig. Absolutely free!! You pay to get OFF of PEI, and the bridge is cheaper so go over by boat, a lovely 1 hr trip, and leave by the Confederation Bridge.

Spent two nights outside Quebec City. Loved the old city, but the French speakers in the campground all acted like we were pond scum and should be soiling their camp. This included the folks running the CG. I have seen that attitude a lot in Quebec. My wife is Canadian, from Ontario, where folks will give you the shirt off their backs. I hope you have all of the joys we had that trip and none of the hassles. We will be hitting western Canada later this summer on a huge swing up the west coast then back across southern Canada and down to home in Fla by end of August. Be safe out there!

We stayed at KOA campgrounds in both Montreal and Quebec City. We met alot of nice French speaking people in both places. Sorry if some have had bad experiences, but we did not. We always walk the campgrounds and enjoy talking to many of the other campers. We have been to areas of the States that have made us feel unwelcome, but we always try to make the best of it. My wife is also from Ontario, we spend a lot of time there and also enjoy the people.

Years ago, not recent experience, re the insurance.

You may be covered, and probably are, but, CAN you prove it, say, on the side of the road, God forbid, if you have had an accident.

We always obtained a YELLOW proof of insurance paper from our insurance agent, easy peasy, call agent, tell him you want that yellow proof paper, he mailed to us.

The idea is to have PROOF that the Canadian officers can see, ON THE SPOT.

Call your agent, ask a lot of questions. The yellow proof clearly stated it was for coverage IN Canada.

Read my disclaimer, we have not done this in a few years, and things change, this may have changed.

Passport is the best and easiest way to cross. Check your carrier for insurance coverage. Check for the latest and up to date border crossing rules. True they may run your plates when you cross and if a CC holder it may show up and they will ask if you have firearms. Note do not have any ammo on board not ev en one round.Do not have a holster on board.Check for rules regarding your pets.

Execpt for a "Eh" or "aboout" you will not know where you are...To avoid a heart attack do not attempt to convert the price of Diesel from per Litters to per gallons. We have never had a problem.

Our Gallon is 4 and a half litres...and it is very close to 20% more than your gallon..or.. 4 litres is almost equal to your gallon, which is 20% less than our gallon...SPEED Limits .. Km/h...60 mph is 100 Km/h......50Km/h is 30 Mph.......a simple and fairly close conversion is...multiply the Km/h speed by 6 and that will give you your approximate speed....100Km/h X 6 = 60 mph..............50Km/h X6 = 30 mph.. our money is the same as yours..except we do not have dollar bills or two dollars bills anymore.. we have Loonies( $1.00) named for the image of a loon on its face and a brass gold colour.. and toonies..($2.00) it has a silver coin imbedded in the brassy gold outer coin.. other than that we have very colourful bills in $5. $10 and $20 denominations..enjoy your visit, for the most part you wont even realize you are in a foreign country....

We live right across the lake from Canada and Canadian change is accepted at every store without notice. However the Loonies and toonis will most likely draw a .......what the heck is this.We have a bunch of them left over from trips. We throw all Canadian money is a jar and save it for the next trip.\We find it works better to take a minimum number of Canadian $$. We will change over maybe 100.00 which in our area can be had at most any bank.We use credit cards as the exchange rate if any is done with the transaction and most merchants would rather do the credit card than deal with the exchange rate....however small.
When you pay for say a dinner at the amount is of course in CA $$ when you pay by CC the exchange rate is automatic and your bill when received is in US $$.

If you withdraw from a auto teller say 50.00 you of course get Canadian $$ but the withdrawal on your statement will be in USA $$..generally...less.

Also eases the pain at the pump as the statement amount will be in USA $$$ maybe less.

Traveling in Canada is easy.Border crossings,,It is far easier to get into Canada than it is to get back in the USA....Be aware.

I took Mrs Country Guys advice and called our insurance company Liberty Mutual. They told me there is no need for the yellow piece of paper for proof of insurance in Canada. They recognize the insurance cards and we should be fine. Just wanted to forward this information on to others, I will let you know after our trip is over if there were any problems. Thanks everyone, your tips are very appreciated.
