What axle seals to order

I have started to research what I need do to repack the bearings on the trailer and I have looked in the Dexter manual to determine what seals I need to order. However it isn't clear to me how to determine which seals are required. I have looked at Dexters website and have seen that seals are $18/ea and up and I have read on the MOC others have ordered non Dexter seals. My axles are an eazy lube rated for 6,000 lbs. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

10-36 seals ... doesn't matter the brand unless you want to spend lotsa money on Dexter

Redneck trailer is another vendor. I purchased in store last year. I paid $4 per seal. They also are online and will ship.

bobcat, sounds like you're planning to do the repack the old fashioned way....by hand. I applaud you for that. The EZ Lub system is nice but it is very easy to over load the seals and blow them out. You end up with grease in the brakes and they will NOT work. That happened to me many years ago when the tech at the dealer had no clue what he was doing. He blew out 3 of my 4 seals and I had the worst trip I ever had. Plus it cost me another $200 to fix it myself away from home. So, get dirty and travel with confidence.

Ok, I'm going to do the same as Bobcat. How do you know what axles you have, 6,000 or 7,000? Gotta get the right seals.

Stamped on your axle tube will be a D60 (6000#) or D70 (7000#)Sometimes it's on a white sticker with some more info. I don't think the brake drums (seal located in drum) are any different so the seals will be as described above. The magnet and brake linings are different between the 6000# and 7000#.

Not trying to hijack this thread or anything, but if you take everything apart, do you have to get new seals? I have two brakes with broken springs I'm about to fix. While I'm at it, I'm going to replace the springs on all four brakes, repack the bearings, and upgrade my tires. I've got all the parts except the seals. Should I get new seals too?

Assuming you could get the seal out without damaging it (unlikely) ... you'd be tripping over a dollar to save a nickle if you don't get new seals. Attune to changing your oil and skimping on the filter.

To be absolutely sure about what replacement parts are needed for your axles, just call Dexter and have the number stamped into the axle tube. They will be able to tell you every part with numbers that are on those axles. (260) 636-5311 You can also order parts from them, not sure how their pricing is compared to other places.

Dexter is soooooooooo PROUD of their parts (priced direct) that you have to spell proud all in capital letters. You can buy Dexter parts way cheaper from vendors already mentioned in this thread.

Well, got it done last week, what a pain. Had to use 2 railroad ties under the 20 ton bottle jack to get the trailer high enough to remove the tire then lowered it on to a jack stand, did 1 tire at a time. Very little grease inside and bearings looked good. Wasn't hard just a pain to do. Hardest part was getting the tire back on.

That's why despite some on the MOC that vehemently denounce jacking under an axle ... I jack under the axle between the spring U bolts. I as well as others have made a V bracket out of angle iron to fit on top of my jack to more distribute the load. A few pumps to get the individual tire clear of the ground ... the rest is EZ Peezy as Ozz says. I have access to a load cell that fits on top of a jack. I have used it while jacking my 3150RL up to do bearings and brakes ... to get an individual tire off the ground about an inch (no real need to go higher) ... I'm lifting @2760#. Granted if I jack higher, the weight increases as the leaf springs gradually take on more load off the axle still on the ground. What I'm trying to get across here is you're not lifting near as much trailer as you have in your mind. The warnings about jacking under an axle are to keep unthinking individuals from placing a jack under the center of an axle and trying to lift goodness knows what up all at once.

I generally use the Level up to raise the trailer to service the brakes and bearings. I did purchase an excellent jack kit from BMI, but because I already had a 12 ton bottle jack, I got the kit without a jack but with an adapter to fit the larger ram.
