To get to Silverton, you need to go over Red Mountain Pass. I'd advise against that, and I live here and drive in the mountains all the time. Ouray is beautiful, and you can make that your base of operations and drive over to Silverton in your TV. There is another pass to the west, Lizard Head, I think, off of the top of my head, that is a lot easier. I'll check back when I can look up the name for you.

If you want to come in the other way, you can go to Durango and over Molas pass to Silverton. Last time I was up there there was construction on top that resulted in pretty slow going. That was last summer, so they may be finished with whatever they're doing by now.

That part of Colorado is some of the prettiest country you'll ever see, but just remember that it's not called high country for nothing, and watch your speed on the downhill grades.
