Suburban Furnace

Finally, after 3 years we have developed a problem. When returning to the Monty yesterday the furnace was making a terrible noise. My first thought was a bearing, but in listening more, it does not sound like a bearing, more like something came loose, like a baffle, cowel or something like that, and is rubbing against the fan. Any quick thoughts on it before I start removing it??? Any suggestions welcome. Happy Trails, Steve and Susie

The sail switch is VERY close to the blower wheel. It might have come loose and be rubbing. BTW your furnace should be an Atwood instead of Suburban.

Thanks David, am getting ready to take it out and see whats up. I expected an Atwood also, but it is a Suburban. Thanks for the tip. Happy Trails, Steve

It is possible that some critter like a mudder built a home in the fan cage, there are two fans, one for hot air and one for exhaust. The fans are on the same motor and shaft so it could be either one.

It is also possible that if it is a metalic sound perhaps one of the vent pipe fittings has come loose at the back of the furnace and is flapping when the fan is running. My fan blades are plastic, not metal so something rubbing on them would not necessarily sound metalic.

Good luck in finding the problem.

Well all, thanks for the tips. Everythings back together and actually quieter than before. If I said a dead mouse in the cage, would ya believe me? Must have just gotten in there while we were out in the afternoon. Found three screws that had vibrated out, so now with everything back together, things are nice and quiet. Thanks all, Happy Trails, Steve and Susie

Glad it was a painless repair for you. Not so for the mouse.

Did find one interesting factor tho, the Atwood furnace was probably changed for the Suburban, as I could tell by scratch marks, and changes to the outer cage of the furnace, that it was not the original furnace. Am surprised the service manual was in the packet of manuals for the trailer tho, but thankful. With the three screws back in place now, it is much quieter than ever before, and where someone had increased the size of the duct opening, there was no screw, so added two there to eliminate any vibration there, and a screw in each of the unused knock outs for more heat runs. Anyhow, glad its over and will wait for the next camping surprise. Happy Trails, Steve and Susie
