state road laws.

I just read RVTripWizard road laws. I noticed many states have a maximum length on trailers (28'6" & 35'). Has anyone experienced an event of exceeding a states length restrictions? We drove thru and camped in TX & LA with no problem; our 3160RL Monty is 35' long (over the 28'6"). TX & LA have a trailer length restriction of 28'6" & truck & trailer restriction of 55'.

Is that different for semi's? They have 53' trailers? There are a lot of hidden laws, take an attorney to find them all and then you could not pull it off the dealers lot, just like the Class A Exempt license requirement in TX

Have only heard of that once and that person was towing a boat behind their 5th wheel. It was legal in the state to double tow, but they got them for being over the total length allowed. We're around 60' overall and I've never worried about it, but I don't double tow or do anything to attrack attention.

I noticed the various maximum trailer length in other states the other night too. We've driven thru TX and LA with our 40' 3731FL. We didn't get stopped or asked any questions.

I've done a little poking around different sites this morning and I'm seeing conflicting information across several sites. Thus, I'm at the point where I don't trust any of the sites. I agree with Ram Mountain in that it would take an attorney to sort thru it all.

I had two different conversations with MS DMV and was told both times that my Class C license was sufficient for any size of recreational vehicle. In other words, exempt from needing a license endorsement or Class A license. It may cost me in the future, but I'm relying on my MS Class C license getting me anywhere I want to go in the US. We'll test that this summer when we get into the New England states. Like DQDick, I don't plan to do anything that would attract any attention to myself.

I think most states sort of have reciprocity with your home state. So if legal at home, you can drive thru - no problems.

I don’t put much faith in the accuracy of those towing law sites. If you compare several of them you will see a lot of contradictions. Some of the sites say TX does not specify a trailer limit other than the total combined limit of 65'.

Not many 5ers are under 30’ and many TTs are over 30’ and I have never read about anyone being stopped for their trailer being too long.

That's true for the driver's license type but not for vehicle length.

In Nevada, the max length is 70' for any combination if you have a class C license and vehicle combination (under 26k). If you have a class A and the tow vehicle is rated over 26k GCWR, there is no stated length limit. Here's the link to the law on the books:

https://www.leg.state.nv.us/NAC/NAC-...l#NAC483Sec110

In California, it's 65ft (75ft for commercial 28'6 doubles, but the first trailer can't exceed 28'6) except for interstates where they permit 53' trailers with no restriction on overall length. http://www.dot.ca.gov/trafficops/trucks/quickguide.html

Idaho is 75ft. https://itd.idaho.gov/wp-content/upl...6/07/Extra.pdf

Yeah, that freaked me out at first too. But then I read about the exemption for recreational vehicles.

You're misreading the regulations. The short trailer lengths apply to double towing situations, specifically the length of a second trailer. If you are just towing a single trailer... these rules do not apply. Pay attention to the overall length... 65' in most states and virtually every RV 5er and tow vehicle combo will be under that length.
