Hitch Buddy
Have you seen the Hitch-Buddy. It's a way to tow your 5er and keep your TV bed empty, or full of other toys like a golf cart or something. Web site is www.hitch-buddy.com kind of pricey though at close to $7,000.00 interesting looking though......Pete

I saw that in Trailer Life, did a double take. Kind of a neat concept, but I think I would be nervous following one of those. I think I'll save $14,000 ($7K hitch buddy + $7K new toy for back of pickup).

I know when we were looking for a TV that would be able to tow a large 5er Chevy and Ford both list higher limits if you tow a 5th wheel vice a conventional trailer. I was told that this is because 15-25% of the weight (pin weight) gets loaded on the TV forward of the rear axle.
If you towed a 5th wheel using the hitch buddy, I think safety/warranty/liablility wise you would be limited to the TV's "conventional" trailer limits since all towing is passing through the type III hitch. On top of that you would need to subtract the "approximately 1000 lb" weight of the hitch buddy (from the pdf brochure on the linked site above). That leaves most Montanas sitting above what most of the pickups on the market today would have left of their "rated" tow capacity.IMHO.

You guys just are not creative enough. What you want to do is hook your fiver up normally. Then hook one of these Hitch-Buddy thingies to the back of your present fiver and attach a whole second fiver to that and go down the road just like the doubles the big boys haul. Would be a great place for the extended family (ie: mother in law) Of course then you would have to get a TV with a double back seat and six doors to have a place for everybody. I can see it now!!! Just you wait. Some idiot will try it.

Yikes!!! That looks WAY too much like the dolly I used when pulling doubles. Thats how I was injured. Picked the dolly up to hook to the pintle hook of the tractor and BAM....blew two discs in my back. I'll stick with what I already have...LOL

I saw a Suburban towing a 5th wheel with one of these. I could not believe my eyes but it looked level and they were doing about 60 + mph, thank goodness they were going the other way.

It has its own brakes, so maybe it would eliminate the need to have dual-wheel trucks?

Certainly would remove the pin weight problem Larry! 
Except, all of the Monty weight is pulled on the receiver hitch. How much capacity can you get on those? I thought they were pretty much 12K.
