What is this thing?

This is on the ceiling of the bedroom in my 2955RL.
What is it?

That is the thermostat sensor for your bedroom air conditioner. Do not allow ac discharge vent to blow directly toward it or it won't work properly.

The only problem is it usually is too close to the AC unit and you have to work to make sure the cool air doesn't blow right on it.

I don't have a bedroom A/C?

Must be the sensor for the Thermostat on the stairs? Or is that one inside the actual thermostat?

If you remove the cover there should be a wire with a red end (thermocouple). If it is hooked up to your thermostat you can tell by holding the red end between your fingers as your spouse watches the thermostat reading rise. Otherwise it is probably pre-wired for the 2nd AC unit and is just wire awaiting to be hook up.

Is your unit pre-wired for a second AC?

It appears so. There is a cover plate indicating 120V inside.

That is a secret listening device that has been planted by very slick Russian Spies. Be careful what you talk about in the bedroom as every word is being listened to and recorded or it might be a flatulent gas detector. They're pretty clever and sometimes it's hard to tell them apart!

Thanks for the heads up packerfan.

I usually only discuss private or secret things with my wife in the shower with the water running. I don't think the thing will pick up anything we say while we're in there.

I have a 2005 2955RL and I don't have one of those. I don't have a A/C in the bedroom either, but it is wired for one.

You expect the assembly line to tell you they gave you the second ac unit? They gave you the sensor for it, who knows what else you got unknowingly.

This is a fun post! I think I would check the roof -- maybe the AC is hidden up there waiting to be found. Great Comments--MOCers come thru again.

Do I detect "sensor envy" here?

Maybe???
But no flux capacitor was ever installed.

Unless it is a 'fake' flux capacitor....

That's only because the factory inverter can't produce the required 1.21 Giggawatts.

We have the bedroom a/c and it would never seem to shut off. Took that little cover off and the hole for the wire was 4 times bigger than it should have been and I could feel the heat in the ceiling coming through. Put a dab of silicone around the hole the wire comes through and now it works as it should.

I believe I have the answer. The unit in questions was wired for the second AC and has the dual thermostat. The factory installs this sensor when the dual thermostat is factory installed.
