2014 Dodge Ram 4wd info

Thinking of trading my 2wd Dodge 3500 on a Dodge 3500 4wd. I know I am level as it sits right now but don't think there is anymore room for adjustments. So does anyone have a 4wd Dodge and how is it to set up the hitch. I know I got to buy a dang adapter for the factory set up at around $400. Thanks

Can't help you with a new one, but our 2011, I believe, is the same height. I was able to adjust the king pin and my Reese's hitch to get things close to level. I think the hitch probably is what you need to look at. How adjustable is it, in other words.

I looked into that before ordering my. 2014 F 450. The 2014 Dually would be perfect fit to my Montana, according to my dealer. He called the factory. My new Ford required no adjustments either. I would have ordered the Ram, but frankly I could not get the "build program" at home or at the dealer to configure, what I wanted. I add one option, them another was deleted. Very frustrating for me and the dealer! I just would not take risk of truck, not being exactly what I wanted. Ford gave no deletes, just complete customization including optional ( off the books) upgrades.

My 2014 Ram 3500 Dually is Not 4x4, but 4x2 so the height may be a little different. I ordered the factory prep for the hitch and bought the Reese 30154 adapter. Then any standard hitch that fits where a Reese R20 fits will work. Hopefully I'll find out what adjustments I have to make next Monday during PDI of my trailer.

Artemus, I played a lot with the Ram Build program, but it turned out the dealer could sell me a Laramie about the same price as me trying to configure everything the way I wanted. I got a lot of option I'll never use, but they should help resell at some point. I ending up getting it under invoice, which is unusual for a factory order deal on a Dually, in our part of the country.

Dave and Jim, you'll be surprised how fast those unwanted options turn into "must haves". Even here in Yuma it was almost freezing yesterday morning. Joyce punched the heated seat button and I hit the heated steering wheel button and we were happy campers. Would I have bought the truck with those things on it, no way. Would I buy another without them, no way. Also, since we winter in AZ and summer in KS the cooling seats are another option we never would have considered that we really like.

On my '12 Ram 3500 4x4 I have the B&W companion. I can move the hitch plate position up and down, front to back in 9 positions. My trailer pin can be moved up/down to 2 positions. It is in the lowest position. This raises the trailer up the most.

By moving the hitch front to back you can adjust the weight on the front axle. I have mine in the most forward position and that location adds 20(twenty)lbs to my front axle.

It is in the middle set of holes up and down. (hitch head is 17.25" above bed) I can raise or lower the head from 16.25"-18.25". I have 7-8" clearance between bed rails and trailer overhang.

The bed rail height unloaded at the rear axle is 57". Tail gate top is 58".

Can you not order/buy a '14 with out the bed pucks?

Jim

I have the Pullrite Super5th 20.5k in my 12' Ram 4x4 DRW and with the hitch all the way up and the kingpin set in the middle bolts on the coach, the set up rides level.

That was my main concern is the bed height. Right now on my 07 I have almost 10 inches. But standing next to a 2014 I almost can't even look in over the bed rail lol lol... It is a lot taller then my truck now. I still have to look at my pin to see where it is set at. My brain tells me that it should be fine since they do prewire and have the hitch setup for a 5th wheel. It's just that it sure seems like the 4wd bed is a lot higher....

Dave, you show you are in Copperas Cove. Got nothing to do go east to 77 and come south down to Weslaco and I'll do a hook up and tow for you. We have a few empty sites right now. Come stay for a while. Might have to adjust your trailer pin?

Stop in LaGrange @ Colorado River Landing RV park, eat at the Mex restaurant on the corner. Fuel on top of the hill going south, over the river, and fuel again in Kingsville or in Rivera. 2 new Valero truck stops there. One N bound, one S bound just S of town.

The 4x4 stuff is tall. I have to get on a 2 step stool thing to reach the hitch. When I first got my '12 Ram I was really worried about having to remove spring spacers, but it settled about a inch the first 2500 miles. Now it sits level hooked up.

You might build you a box 17 1/2 tall, make a 2" hole in it for the pin and ask a dealer if you can test drive it to your house for a test fit. Put box in bed over axle, back under your rig and lower rig onto box and check clearance. I have 3180lbs pin weight.

My '14 3150RL may be a built taller than yours since trucks back then were shorter.

I just went to a '13 3500 SRW 4X4 from a '08 F250 4X2. The bed in the Dodge sets about 4" higher than in did on the Ford. I lowered my drawtite hitch one notch from the highest setting. This gave me about 2" and I still have 6" of clearance. At this setting the rig is slightly nose high but not enough to be concerned about. On the rv bubble scale, the rig is slightly less than "1" on the scale.

Watch the tire size also. Our 2013 GMC 4x4 has 18" wheels which is a HUGE difference from our 2002 4x4 with 16". I was shocked at the height difference. Difficult to step up to the running boards. Feels almost level to semis when we go by them. I had air bags in the 2002, and I didn't put them on the 2013. I seem level, though, in the 2013 when pulling the 3400. I did notice that the 2013 GMC Duallys only have 17" wheels, though. Not sure why the difference....

I talked with some folks at the dealers about the tire sizes. I noted that for DRW, the only option for tires was 17". It seems that when it comes to max towing, 17" tires have the strongest sidewall. That's way there are no options for DRW except for style of wheel.

I bet the Dually has 17" rims and tires because of the tire width and the rim offset. The tires have to be pretty narrow (compared to an 18" or 20" tire) to minimize the offset (and stress) of the back-to-back mounting rims.

We have a 2013 Ram 3500 4x4 SRW Laramie Longhorn Mega Cab. First, as far as I know the only option that knocks another one out is the convenience group vs the high Mount camera. The reason being that the auto dimming headlights and rain sensing wipers both use the mirror where the monitor for the camera would go. Our hitch did not change from our 2008 3500 Silverado, even though we have 18" tires. The Mega cab is a great option if you actually travel with more than two people frequently. Love this truck. Good luck.

I have a 2011 Dodge 4X4 dually. I was concerned with not having enough bedrail clearance. I lowered the rear of the truck by moving the bottom 3 leaf spring to the top of the axle. This lowered the bed rail height little over 2"s. I can get you more info on this subject if you need it.

Ok I think the regular 3500's have 17 inch tires and the Laramie Longhorns have 18 inch cause I looked at one of those today. But I think the Black Dog is gonna be around a while longer. Just can't pull the trigger on $700-800 a month payments or I need to rob a couple more banks to get up a whole lot bigger down payment. Mine is a Sport truck and can't see trading it on a new truck with less options then I have to get a new one. Mine is good for another 100K miles lol lol.....
