Any recommendations for diesel fuel additive?

Based on what I read on the "Truck on LSD" topic, the new diesel fuel in pre-2006 engines should not require any "operator" changes for our sort of towing, except more frequent replacemnt of the fuel filter. I would suspect, however, that a good fuel additive would be beneficial, at least for the first few months or so, during the introduction of the new ULSD fuel.

Any recommendations from the heavy-duty users out there? I've never used any additives, and am not familiar with the various brands/types. Where do you buy them while "on the road"?

Also, any implications for the users of "chips"? It would seem logocal that, if EGTs are correctly monitored, worst case would be a slightly lower power output with the new fuel, but still above "stock".

Comments, please?

Thanks

I am sure there will be lots of additives come out by the 2010 deadline for ULSD. I am presently using Power Service because of the availability through Walmart. It is marked on the container for low sulfur fuels.

Tom, do you use the additive with every tank of fuel? I've never used additives, either, but have the same concerns as PJ. Your PSD is almost ten years old and still going strong so you must be doing something right. Thanks.

When I was living in Iowa, I used Power Serve because of its anti-gelling qualities. Since being on the road full time, I've been using Lucas Fuel Treatment. I'm of the opinion that if the fuel we are using contains less lubricity, then we should use something. In seminars I've attended, especially those put on by diesel specialists, they all lean toward using an additive. I know we read in our manuals not to add anything but I hate to monkey with success. The additive I'm using seems to work for me. I now have 136,000 and have not had any injector problems. I change my filter between 15,000 and 20,000 miles also.

I use Stanadyne, it is recommended my GM. Only have used it for a short time now about 5 tanks but believe that my fuel mileage has improved. See-Ya

Steve,

I have been using power service in the past only occasionally, not every tank. Now I think I will start using it more. maybe every other tank with LSD. I will experiment and monitor mileage as a performance indicator. Anxious to try a few gallons of ULSD if I can find it.

Yes the old girl has given me good low maintenance service. Right now I would not trade it.

Oh, keep in mind you will probably start seeing Bio-diesel at some stations. There is no sulfur and clean burning. All states have it but the fueling sites are limited.

Are all stations currently Low Sulphur or just some? Anyone notice any other issues? I just posted about my diesel problem from yesterday and hope to get some responses there. I doubt low sulphur diesel is the source of my problem, but if it is a contributor, maybe I need to look at an additive.

Rames,

Calif will be 100% ULSD by 9/1/06

Rest of states

As of June 1 must have LSD or ULSD or both until Dec 2010(Choice of retailer)
All retail sales of stateside diesel will be ULSD by Dec 1 2010.

All Diesel will have to have one of three labels placed on the pump June 1. (offroad,LSD or ULSD)

Start reading the labels at every fillup.
