EGT values please

We have a '06 2500HD and have installed a pyrometer gage, but not sure what it is telling me. Had one in our previous TV, a '99 powerstroke, and rarely saw more than 950 degrees, maybe 1050 up a long, steep hill and about 650-800 cruising with the 5W. The new truck can hit 1300 in about two heartbeats (I do my best to not exceed 1250) and runs about 1000 at cruise--(I am going a bit faster). Does anyone know what the EGT ranges should be and for what duration or knows of a web site I can got to for this info? Have asked this question on other forums and have only received opinions---we all have one, but would like some facts, please.

Mobill,

I am sure these people know.

Search on the forums for pyrometer. There are quite a few posts up there on this subject. they cover what to buy and how to place the sensor. So I am sure they cover temps.

This has been discussed before. EGT temperature depends upon where the thermocouple is installed. Mine is after turbo and 900 degrees is the maximum that I should see. Those that have a before turbo installation should see 1250-1300 degrees max.

I run anywhere from 800 - 1150 degrees when towing the coach. I have mine installed post turbo and the max I would let the temps get is 1200. It is pretty hard for me to get the temps much over 1100 and that was on a grade of 8% for 5 miles.

Mine is installed pre turbo and I was told 1250 degrees should be the max I allow. I have heard the temps will vary quite a bit from truck to truck depending on which code the computer has been programmed with. Fortunately, mine runs rather cool and I rarely have to back off the throttle to stay under 1250 degrees.

Mine is pre-turbo and, like you said, it can jump up there in a couple of heartbeats. I watch that gauge religiously pulling up steep grades at speed.

I've been told 1370 is the number I should not exceed on the Ford 6.0 powerstroke and should not stay above 1200 for extended periods. I don't know for sure what constitutes an "extended period." Earlier this week we had a 16 mile long grade running from 6% to 9% and a 17 mile long grade including 11 miles of 6% and 6 mile grade of 8%. I took those to be extended periods. Both those grades had enough mountain curves with 15mph to 35mph speed limits that it was easy to keep EGT down to about 1100 with some forays to 1200. On the 17 mile grade we also had outside temperature of 104 so I was watching engine and tranny temperatures closely, too. I also watch the boost gauge on the dash closely as I prefer to keep turbo boost below 22 psi. I've seen it go to 28 and the gauge redlines at about 34 psi but 22 makes me more comfortable.

We have a 05 2500HD GMC with an Edge chip in it. The EGT sensor is mounted in the pre-turbo area. It has an alarm that go off if the EGT exceeds 1350. Normally in overdrive I am up around 950-1100 in hilly country. Drop it down into 3rd gear in the hills and the temp goes down in the EGT and cooling. Ovedrive in hilly country is a killer and can cause the EGT and Truck temp climb to max degrees. We tow a 05 3475 similar in wt as the 3400 and have set the edge alarm to go off when ever I exceed the EGT 1300 mark and the 210 degrees temp on the cooling.

Thanks for the info. Think I will opt for a larger exhaust in the very near future. Know that it helped on the old F-350 to lower the EGT by 50-100 degrees overall.
