Did you try to file a claim with your insurance co ? I have worked in the automotive repair business most of my life and have seen them pay for things people do you can't imagine.

We nearly did that last year it was close. We note that most if not all FJ/Pilots have the DEF nozzle behind a door that you must open to get at it. It makes it harder to make a mistake.

Maybe I need to clarify my comment earlier. If GM would have put the filler in a convenient location under the hood, I would be much more supportive. The filler is located near the rear of the engine compartment on the passenger side. My vehicle is a 4x4 which puts it a bit taller. I usually buy my DEF in a box that contains 2.5 gallons and has a built in filler hose. The size of the filler orfice is just slightly larger than the hose. Lifting a 23 lb box, holding the hose, and trying to hit the target opening is no fun, especially when you spill some of the fluid. When I look at the windshield washer fill located in a convenient spot, I have to wonder why did they locate the DEF fill where it's at? When GM makes me chief test engineer, that will be my first order of business!

First a truck with DEF fluid is not healthy for a 20 mile commute. Then I hear about this. What happened to the days where a diesel would run on anything. I'm still running a 7.3 on whatever I put into the tank. Used oil to recycled fryer oil. It all works. Is Def that different? It gets injected into the fuel supply anyway, granted maybe further down the supply chain.

In the words of Hillery. "What difference at this point does it make"
It is made to burn in one way or another.

I remember my dad and grand dad would run a gasser on kerosene because it was cheap but, YOu had to start it on gas down the carb throat.

There are to many issues and problems with current regulations and tollerances in manufacturing.

Once upon a time there were 4 hoses under the hood. 2 for the radiator and 2 for the heater core, Unless you had the luxury of Air Conditioning..
Granted the mileage wasn't great and the longevity wasn't there but a 4 barrel was a sure upgrade to a 2 barrel and the cam change and overbore was the cats meow.

No, the DEF never enters the fuel supply. It is injected into the exhaust stream ahead of the SCR catalyst and it's purpose is to reduce the NOX emissions which also allows the fuel mixture to be leaned out which gives you better fuel mileage. I find the fill location very convenient, as I can set the DEF box on top of the air filter box, and just tip the box over as I insert the fill hose, attached to the box, into the filler port. I only have to pick the box up right at the end of emptying to get the last of the DEF drained.

I sure wish there were some memory joggers we could all put in place so this doesn't happen. I am so used to running on autopilot when I pull in for fuel that I'm already thinking about other things when I'm fueling up. That's why I filled half a diesel tank with unleaded on my F-250 and had the unleaded nozzle in my F-350 wondering why it wasn't pumping. I hit the green button on the pump but put the wrong nozzle in the tank so nothing happened. Thank you Lord. But I've got to change my habits and not get distracted so this doesn't happen! And location doesn't seem to matter, like windshield washer fluid in the DEF. None of us are immune. I'm disconnecting my autopilot

No it does not. Fuel and DEF are separate lines, never interface. DEF has zero impact on a 20 mile commute. DEF running thru the fuel system of a diesel is like somebody drinking Draino

Glad our truck has the EGR burn off instead of that stupid DEF....

Sorry for your pain.

I feel for you. Heck of a painful mistake. You made the right decision to do the full kit install if you have any hope of future warranty coverage. I've spent enough time dealing with late model fuel system issues and the manufacturers response to those issues. These engines aren't as resilient as they used to be and some manufacturers are having a hard time standing behind their products. With that I'll keep my long winded angry rant in my head.

Sorry, but I don't understand this type of thing happening. My Ford also has the two fillers side by side BUT the DEF cap is SMALL and BLUE and the FUEL cap is GREEN and LARGER. How could these be mixed up?

Those types of mistakes seem to happen more and more as we get older. I find myself doing some stupid things now and again, so far nothing costly, but I always worry when fueling the TV at someplace other than Truck Stops.

Yep I do remember the low bridge. $3700.00 latter all is well except for DW ducking every time we go under a bridge. But it was a mistake.

I have found pool noodles to be noggin-savers. Just the act of putting them on the slides creates some element of awareness which seems to lessen the number of dents in my head. Wish there was an equivalent safety catch for fueling and DEF. Like I said, I have to be intentional rather than running on autopilot.

Mike, Sorry about the mishap. Anyone who thinks that this couldn't happen to anyone of us has never been distracted in their life. I'd like to think I wouldn't have tried to pull forward with the tailgate still up, but I was distracted. Glad to hear everything is running well again.

Since we are confessing some of the dumb things we've done, I can't tell you how many times I've left the control cabinet door open, only to smack my head on it when I walk upstairs. Self closing hinges on my "to-do" list.

Maybe we need signs put out telling people do not talk or come near us when hooking and unhooking , fueling adding def or setting up the camper LOL. But there is always those that don't pay attention to signs Happy Camping.

Just in the last week I started confirming with my wife, "Green Nozzle" before I swiped the card and start fueling. And now your saying some areas have yellow for diesel. Sheesh. I can't win but... I haven't made the mistake again ... Yet.
