Tire should have went before wheel. We are under rear and front axle ratings, but over gvwr by 350 lbs...

I agree with this statement. The tire is the weaker of the two. I suspect that if you spin the wheel on a balancer, you will find it slightly flat on one side. Over the life of the wheel consider how many impacts that it has endured from potholes and such. A single impact mark may not be evident. The tires are a low profile design for a truck (65). In their design, low profile tires place a significantly higher stress on the wheel. There is a shorter sidewall and less cushion at an impact. Myself, I wouldn't try to read any more into it that it actually is-a split wheel that was caught before it had a chance to cause both misery and damage to the truck. Your neighbor is indeed fortunate.

After clicking your link to Monarch Pass, I wonder how much his tire pressure had increased at that elevation after likely being inflated to maximum capacity when cold?

Pin weight.I see little discussion about pin weight on the SW.We have a dually only because of the pin weight issue. If the newer SWD meet the pin weight specs then you are good. It pulls it fine does not apply.

It is simple numbers.

I agree whole hardheartedly with the post below.

Speedster I agree. Safety is what is important. If you look at the J2708 tow standards what you find is the DRW trucks are held to a lower standard. No wonder they are rated higher. The new 2017 Super Duty Ford is rated to tow 32,500 pounds. Does anyone seriously think you can tow the equivalent of 2 Montana campers fully loaded SAFELY with a pickup.

The 32,500 lb rating is GCVW but still to much weight for a one ton anything.
