Generator theft-best prevention method?

I'm planning on purchasing ahonda 2000i and saw the anti- theft handle cover advertised. However this does nothing to stop a thief with a chain cutter which is the most common way of freeing the gen. Any ingenious methods out there besides sleeping with it?

I will let others make suggestions on how to best secure an outside gen, since I never owned one. But I will throw out a suggestion that might help as far as general "campsite security". I bought one at Harbor Freight Tools and went back and got two more. They are wireless motion sensors that have a remote alarm. I position two of them under the Montana facing areas where our chairs and/or bikes are parked. When we are inside for the night I simply turn on the alarm receiver so if there is motion around the bikes or chairs we are immediately alerted.

I have used them now for about 10 months. The batteries last a long time and they never give off false readings if you point them correctly. With one of these you would know if someone comes up to your gen set.

That's a good idea. I can find something better to sleep with.

We secure it to the hitch however if they want it bad enough they will get it. The Kipor weighs in at 145 lbs full fuel so they are gonna have to have a plan.

I bought a stor mor sliding tray and mounted it in the front compartment. slides out when in use, slides back when not and the compartment door is then locked. Out of sight and secure !

If bolted down to the tray floor, sounds like a super solution!

I do the Exact same thing the motion sensors are great and they never sleep. I place one on my golf cart and have one pointing across my lot and if any thing moves into the area it goes off. I lock my valuables up and then i can sleep great right along with my 9mm.

If it were me I would use the motion sensors AND sliding tray. BOTH are great ideas and are now burned into my memory!

First off, I like the motion sensor thing. Next time I'm at HF I'm going to pick a couple up.

I've got a 4kw peak HF generator that I carry in the bed of our truck. I lock it to the front tie down with just a cable and padlock, but it's difficult to see. When we need to use the generator, I unhook and pull forward a bit to get everything out from beneath the Monty, and then start it up while still in the truck bed. (I hook it up with a 30 amp 'extension' cord.) I can set the truck alarm and then go inside the Monty for the night. Figure if someone gets into the truck bed and starts trying to get the generator out over the side (hitch is in the way to the rear), the truck alarm will sound.

And, that HF generator isn't louder than the two 2kw Yamaha inverter ones we used to have running in parallel.

You can buy hardened chain. I don't know how hard it is but if it's close to 60 Rc it would be really rough on a bolt cutter. That would be harder than the bolt cutter.

I use a very large cable and a hardened lock. After that I use insurance.

Frequently, the bad guys cut the handle leaving the chain/cable/lock behind. There are some aftermarket mods out there that attempt to address this vulnerability.
