Upgrade to Dually?
Thought about upgrading to a dually from my F250. Found a one owner 2002 F350 Larait crew cab with the 7.3 with only 58,000 miles. Been owner by a retired guy who only used it to pull a 32ft Challenger 5er.It is a 2wd but in excellant condition.Always garaged. Asking price is $18,000. Does this sound like a good value? New trucks are way more than I want to pay.

Its only worth what you think it is. I bought the one in my signature with 69k on it in 2009 for $21,000. It needed $2,500 worth of repairs but it has been almost perfect since then. I too went from a F250 to the dually and I will never regret it. I agree with you that new trucks are bringing way more than I want to spend.

That is right on NADA's "clean retail" value for this area. And the 7.3 has a good reliability history.

I know the 7.3 is a very dependable engine but it is 10 years old. They sure hold their value well. Most I have seen had close to 200K miles on them.

My opinion is it doesn't matter if it's ten years old or twenty - if it was properly maintained and not abused, it still only has 58k on it. Good engine, low miles, sounds like a winner to me.

Have you considered upgrading your truck? Before the Highway Weight Police jump in, I realize what I'm about to say will not meet the legal door jamb weight limits. Having said that, the only difference between a GM 3/4 ton and a 1 ton dually is the rear springs, extra wheels and box flares. It might be cheaper than selling your truck and buying another, plus with your truck, at least you know the history behind it.

X2 on this. Mine was cool with the weight, but was shifting 140# from the front axle when hooked up. Added air bags and solved even that minor problem. Won't be trading my truck till no one would want it anymore.

Let's see if I got this right. A guy with a 1 ton and a guy with a year old 3/4 ton is recommending to the guy with the 6 year old 3/4 ton that it's OK to drive over weight. None drive the same make of vehicle. Let the games begin.

Super low miles. I think it would make you a great truck-my son's 7.3 has about 180K and is still running strong. Good luck.

Yep...go figure.
Get the 7.3 dually, better engine than either the 6.0 or the 6.4, no telling how the 6.7 will work out. And, you'll have what you need to haul that rig.

Truck that old, depends entirely on how maintained. Recommend if serious buyer, have it checked out throughly by a diesel/Ford technican. Diesel repairs equals big bucks. Low milage does not equal great maintenance. And dont forget the transmission, the weak link of the drive train.

The 6 has the better transmission, for sure. Check the coolant, you can get test strips from Ford. If the coolant is not up to snuff don't walk away, run. The 7.3 can be ruined in a few tens of thousand miles if the coolant is not maintained . The block is a 6.9 that has been bored to 7.3, there fore it is thin. If the coolant is not maintained caveation will set up and it will bore pin holes in the cylinders and ruin the engine. That was a common problem with the 7.3. The 7.3 does not have the power the 6.0. I have had both. My favorite by a long shot was the 6.0. The 6.0 was much more responsive and had a lot more power and is much quieter. Hook it to your camper and pull it.

I have a 2000 7.3 dually and it now has 112,000 miles on it. When I bought the truck almost 6 yrs ago it had 59,000 miles on it. I just got thru with a trip around the country including the Rockies, and through the desert in the heat of the day and not once did it let me down. It still runs like a charm and pulls 17,000 lbs up the hills like no tomorrow. I can't compare to the trucks you are comparing to because I ran chevy 3/4 tons that did a fine job also. Just saying I wouldn't hesitate one bit myself on doing it again. JMHO

I guess I worry about being 10 years old it my have rotten seals and hoses. It may not have the miles but still the years of ageing. Told me the tranny fluid has never been changed. Said the manual said never to change it. The truck is in Tenn about 500 miles from me so right now all I have to go on is phone and pictures. He lives in a small town so not many mecanics to check it out. Hoping to see it out in person later this week.

Manual does require transmission service, specifically flushing and filter change.

Nope, you don't have it straight. The guy with the one ton and the guy with the 3/4 ton are telling him that if he puts the same things on his truck the one ton has, he will in effect have the same capacity as a one ton. I know the concept may be difficult for some to grasp, but at least for GM products, the ONLY difference between the two is the rear springs, extra set of wheels, and fender flares. Everything else, including drive train and brakes is the same.
