furnace

we turned our furnace on for the first time this weekend. The old familiar smell a heater has when it's turned on was pretty strong and it made the smoke alarm go off. The cat hid in the closet and meowed and I covered my nose and the man had to pull the battery out of the alarm. Guess we'll try it again when we're in the driveway and everybody is out of it.

I would inspect for a mouse or other rodent that got in there first

It did not smell like anything dead, just the strong smell of a heater that's hasn't been turned on in awhile.

They do stink, especially when new with oil on them. I did a start-up of 10 new rooftops in a nursing home, one by one on the roof, alarms went off, fire department called, wheelchairs in the parking lot.
I got in my truck and left....
After that episode, I did them one by one.
There could be something sucked into the furnace, that's why (one reason) I tell everyone to install a filter for the furnace.

Where would you install a filter?

When I was working and firing up furnaces for the first time in new homes they would almost always set off the smoke alarm. The sheet metal that is used to build furnace combustion chambers comes with a thin sheet of oil on it. And until it burns off it will smoke and stink.

Use a Pleat, buy a large one and cut it in half. (measure your opening for the size) This is for a 3400RL, it depends on where your return is on your trailer.

Jim,
Is the size of the return air specifically designed for the size of the heater/ac? Does adding a pleat diminish the return air flow, and could this be detrimental to the unit?

Inquiring mind.

The designers of air filters take this into account, the filter does not restrict much airflow...clean. a clogged filter will restrict, also 100% of the return air does not come from the living space, lots of leaks and by-pass. Wall cavities and such.
If the airflow was completely blocked, the safeties would protect the furnace...and you. Good questions.

We all are allowed a few 'oops!' each week; each day, in my case...

sorry about the "oops" haha. We have a 2011 3625re. We've also never have had the smoke alarm go off in our home heater. Of course we live in Texas and don't get to use it much!
