Inverter Voltage

I recently installed a Modified Sine Wave Inverter in our new rig, and for what ever reason I got curious and checked the voltage coming out of it. Well to my surprise it was only 103.8 volts. According to the manufacturer it is within specs, Hum. I had an inverter in our other rig but never checked the voltage. So now I guess I have you thinking, so go check you voltage and see what you come up with. In the trouble shooting guide it says to us a true RMS averaging meter, whatever that is to get the true voltage. Does anyone know the reason it is so low using a standard voltmeter. Rich

Since the Modified is more of a square wave it's peak is lower but the Root Means Squared (RMS) is calculated to almost as high as a pure sign wave.

Thanks John, the article really helped in understanding the differences, so now I know. I wonder how it is on the new HDTV electronics.

Rich, you may want to check with the Mfr of some on your new electronic items, some do not like the modified sine wave and require a true sine wave to function propertly. Things such as a blender, small drill, etc will work with the modified sine, but not the more sensitive electronic items. That's generally why a true sine wave inverter runs a little more in cost.

My Prosine 2.0 puts out 124 volts. 103 seems to me to be a little low though it is within specs.

John, thanks. That's exactly why I purchased it in 2003. Has given us very reliable service.
