Pennsylvania Turnpike

We're traveling from Zanesville, OH, to Gettysburg, PA. The route on Google Maps shows using the toll roads in PA. Any suggestions to avoid? If I figured correctly the charges will be around $27 from New Stanton, PA to Bedford, PA, for Hwy 30.

I don't think you want to take rt 30 from Bedford pa to Gettysburg.....don't think it is recommended for trucks or trailers...better check first....

I've taken a 37' horse trailer on US 30 from Breezewood to Gettysburg. Not for the feint of heart or an amateur. If you feel comfortable with what you are doing and have a tow/haul mode or an equivalent it can be done.

You might also consider I79 south from Washington, PA to I68 east from Morgantown, WV. Hills are steeper, but no tolls, although with the added distance and the hills, you might spend more on fuel than what you would pay in tolls. I believe all of the non-interstate highways will have several serious mountain crossing adventures to contend with. Again, it can be done but not for the amateur.

Do the tolls.Rt 30 is not a pleasant experience. We did it with the 08 F-350 Diesel and the 06 3400. We knew what the road was like but wanted to see if the truck could do it. It did but it was not fun.

Thanks for all the input.

I went back and checked on my Garmin (should have done that in the first place). Routed me I-70 to I-79 down to I-68/70 to Fredrick, MD, to Hwy 15 up to Gettysburg. It's 55 miles further, but avoids the tolls. The only issue might be Hwy 15.

Travelled that route to a rally years ago, never had a problem. The descent into Frederick was interesting, Tow/haul mode and grade braking, had cooling fans and every noise maker on the duramax was making as loud a noise as it could, DW thought the motor was going to fly out of the hood!! It is a scenic route that you will enjoy.

15 from Frederick, MD to Gettysburg is a cake walk. Divided highway all the way and no significant hills.

The added milage will negate most of the cost of the tolls. The PA Pike is a pain....always has been.....always will be. I just drove it from Breezwood to Ohio state line. But if you luck out and the traffic is light it's not bad. Construction is just starting up and there is single lane around MP-98 to 105. I-68 in Maryland has steep hills so you'll burn lots of fuel there. Bottom line, six one way, half dozen the other. By all means avoid Rt 30 east of Breezwood!!!
