Dogs left alone

We are parked in Ocala Sun Rv Resort and yesterday the trailer next to us was has 2 large dogs a springer spanial (Older one)and a young lab. Well the nieghbour on the other side of this trailer noticed a scratching noise and noticed foam coming from under the door. She notified the office, who in turn contacted the owners of the trailer who returned. Well what a mess. the screen was gone as well as the inside door panel, the lower half of the foam insulation was gone and the outside of the door had visable claw marks. the door needless to say was runied --- a two week old trailer. What would have happened to the dog if he had broken through the out side skin, got part way out and not fit, pulled back, oh the thought of a sliced up dog. A lesson learned about leaving dogs alone.

When you said young Lab, that explained everything to us. We left our young Lab alone in the stick house about 20 years ago. When we got home, she had destroyed everything and anything she could find that belonged to me. She was mad at me for leaving her "home alone". She did about $5000 damage to the house. Just an example, we never did find all of my CPAP hose and mask. We've got 2 Maltese dogs now and it would take them a year to do the damage our lab did in about 4 hrs.

Sounds like those folks should have spent some time training their dogs. If they didn't want to take the time to do that they should have at least put them in crates inside, prior to leaving for the day.

Exactly. It's a lot cheaper to deal with damage to a crate.

If folks can not train or care for their animals they should not have them.

We are very careful not to leave our dogs alone for more than a few minutes. As we dog owners know "idle paws are the devils workshop"!

Sometimes the best training in the world is just like telling young kids no. I just doesn't work all the times!!!!

Our dogs are well behaved as far as damaging anything, but can be very loud. With that in mind, the first time we took them with us, I told the lady in charge at the campground that we were leaving them in the trailer alone, but gave her my cell phone, should they start carrying on. A couple hours later, we returned and one of the workers came out and told me in very stern terms if we left them alone again, we would be thrown out of the camp grounds. I marched him inside and told him to ask the lady behind the counter what I told her and asked why I hadn't been called. Seems she forgot to tell the workers there to call us.

Since then, we don't leave them alone unless we're in a parking lot at a restaurant, in which case they act as a great theft deterrent.

I have shared this before. We use a Drop Cam. As long as you have WIFI or hotspot. We can watch the dogs, yell at the dogs ! Great peace of mind when you leave them alone!

That is true but kids grow up animals never do. We have this "bird" that can be as loud as any dog. It is 17 years old and has the brain the size of a cashew nut.It has caused hundred of $$ of damage both at the S&B and the Montana(not the 2013,it will not happen or the bird is history) The bird is somewhat less trouble that a dog but still a PIA.

Dogs like kids are all different. My wife has a business that her and her partner watch dogs in their own houses while the owners are away. Many indoor dogs are just fine for several days to a week alone if visited and walked 3-4 times a day. But there are many that cannot be left alone and will find trouble if no one is there. They do make large crates but she does not like to watch dogs like that left in crates that long. Those are the dogs that the owners should have trained. Not a lot you can do once they are older. But some breeds are not good to leave alone even if trained, like some labs who are puppies all their lives. But ultimately it is up to the owners to determine if you can leave a dog on it's own or not.

It's not all dogs either. We were at a campground in Albuquerque when water started flowing out of a class A. The folks were gone and their cat scratched it's back on their kitchen sink faucet. Once the galley tank filled up the rest was history. Since then, if we aren't connected to sewer with the gray tanks open, we'll turn the water off even while we're at work.

I agree with steelpony. Depends greatly on the dog. We have a 9 yr old Golden that is used to being alone for a while during the day uncrated. We tested her in the trailer by leaving her inside while we went outside and stayed a while a few times. Each time she would go into the bedroom, curl up the back of the bedroom where it was darker, and sleep til we went back in. No barking, no sounds at all. Almost seemed as if she was glad to see us go so she can take a nap. So we have no problem leaving her alone for 2-3 hours, same as we do at home. Our previous Golden was the same way until she passed away.
We have been parked next to others that left their dogs alone and they barked almost the entire time they were gone.
My son has a 4 yr old Lab that I would not leave alone uncrated any where. That dog has boundless energy and is always looking for something to get into.

Our concern about leaving pets unattended takes a bit of a different twist. Our two dogs, luckily, are well behaved when left alone. We've asked neighbors to spy on them and give us a report. So far no problem there.

But what happens when you leave your pets unattended in the trailer on a hot summer day and the power fails, killing the air conditioner? We are in the process of getting an interlock that starts our generator in the event of a power failure. Not sure how many others would consider that or what to do if they didn't have a built in generator.
