Whisper Quiet mods.

What seems to have worked for us with the Whisper Quiet AC. We opened each return air vent with two 10" lengths of 3/4" PVC (it's what I had laying around and worked well). We also cut the extra off the sleaves of each supply vent and cut every other louver off 5 supply vents (the others I left to direct air away from thermostats etc) and used aluminum tape where the factory didn't do so well. The last two days have been in the middle 90's, with us in full sun, and we have been comfortable, without any extra fans, and not had any freezing up with the A/C fans running on auto. Sometime before next summer (when we might see 121 for a heat index again) I'm going to open up some of the return air holes where they still aren't cut completely open.

Dick I put 1 1/4 PVC down the middle and what a difference it made. When I looked into them the top of the duct was almost touching the bottom.

Since I didn't have anything bigger I just used the smaller and put one on each side of the duct. That's kind of why I posted since you apparently can make it work in a variety of ways.

I was tryin to see if I can make this improvement on my 2005 2955RL. As far as I know the only return is in the A/C unit in the ceiling. I don't see a place to put the PVC. I think my A/C is a Dometic.

The sad truth is you don't have a need to make the improvements. Your unit doesn't have any of the issues of the new "improved" version. As long as you keep your filters clean and adjust your dumps to your satisfaction you should be fine. You could cut every other fin on supply vents you want more to come out of, but adjusting the dumps on your unit was enough for me. We did have a member named Ozz who suggested cutting the sleeves on the older units (he was an HVAC man) but I never had the need on my old rig. If I could have got our new rig with the same A/C you have I would have.

Dick, do you just remove the intake grate and slide the PVC pipe up into the duck and this helps open it up? We had some freezing up issues on several trips. This is a new Montana for us our last one was a 2001. Which had a standard a/c. Just trying to understand the fix. Thanks

Yes. Using the smaller tubing I could just shove up to 12" crosswise thru the grate and then turn them and force them into place. Be careful, the mounting screws from the vent will be sticking up in some places, but that just helped secure the tube in place. The folks who use large tubes probable remove the grate and just feed them right up the middle.

We just got back from our maiden voyage in our 2018 3811MS. While we like it a little cooler we were pretty comfortable with both AC running.
The temps since the storm have been cooler but a lot of humidity to deal with.
I would like to change the vents or modify the existing vents fins but not sure how to remove them. Can anyone share the how to with me?

The vent is two parts the part you can see with the fins is the outer cover and has three pins that hold it on. You'll see the indentations on it. I use a small screwdriver that I stick in the outer edge of the pin hole and push out. Once you pop the part with the fins off, you'll see the sleeve which is held in by four screws. If you just want to do the fins take the cover part off and trim them as you want and snap it back into place. I used a folding knife type razor knife to trim out what I wanted to trim.

mbjam359 In hot weather with 2 units running it stayed nice inside. After the mod it is rare that I have to run 2 units.

That is good to know. I may not get a chance to mess with mine for a week or 2. I will keep you all in mind if I have any questions.

You might want to go to lowes or home Depot and buy a roll of the aluminum duct tape as I can almost guarantee that the factory will have done a crappy job of sealing the flange to the duct. The duct on my unit wasn't sealed very well at all of the air outlets. I had to cut down all of the inner flanges as well as they were way too long and stuck up in the duct a lot which really made airflow flow around them and not into them with any efficiency.

Should have mentioned that. Between resealing the holes and tapeing up the heat hose running to the bedroom, in the basement (to strengthen it), I used about a whole roll.

We just got the Mod done to both the living room and bed room A/C. We used 1 1/4 " PVC 10" long. Just took off the vent with the filter and removed the internal keeper grate (4 screws). Put the PVC in long ways and turned it 90 degrees. It really opened up the duct which was almost 100% closed. I really believe it improved the air flow by over 50%.we have had constant freeze up issues on this unit this summer. I am excited to try it out on our way to Goshen. Thanks to everyone who provided these suggestions.

No doubt opening up the collapsed return air helps but go on top your unit, remove the cover then the foam shroud, get all the wood chips, saw dust and who knows what else is embedded in the fins of the coil out, then you need to get the two hand full of wires that were just thrown in the duct up and attached to the back of the electrical enclosure so air can pass freely, shotty installation job!

As i have a 2014 Montana 3402RL with black accents and live in Arizona most of the time, I think I am going to spray the AC covers white in addition to putting the pVC pipe fix in the return vents. Also thinking of increasing the size of the vents and find a better one with easier to change filters. Anyone have a source?
