Fifth Wheel King Pin Support Jack

We are wondering if it is adviseable to use a Support Jack on the fifth wheel hook for extened periods of time.

Please reply

We use the tripod for the front end of the unit. It seems to take a bit more of the movement out when walking around. We also put the braces under the slideouts for extra support.

My Monty sits in my drive with a bipod. Certainly relieves stress on the jacks because I tighten it up pretty good.

Bill and Ann,

Keystone does not (at least as of the 2003 models)approve of supports under the slides. I was told it would void my warranty. The problem is that if the rig shifts you could easily bend the slide mechanism. Your Monty is designed to support your slides and whatever weight might be in them.

I use the tripod under my kingpin all summer at the lake. It seems to help as mentioned above, take the rocking out of the coach as people move around. I have had my slides out now for over 4 1/2 months now and have no problem. I leave the slides out all summer, have done it with this new fifth wheel as well as my previous Mountaineer TT.

Ditto here...I leave the slides out all summer and use a bi-pod under the front. Haven't had any problems at all.

Cmdr Dewey,
That's interesting. The manual for our 2004 suggests using slideout supports for extended periods. Not tight, just touching.

I use the slide supports that are spring loaded. There is some give to them as they are not tight against the slide.

We use a tri-pod king pin stabelizer when we are set up. Takes a lot of the movement out of the rig and has a lock to make it harder for someone to back up to the 5er and steal it.

We use the tripod when in one location for a week or more. Sometimes if for three days. For shorter times I don't bother with it. As far as I know the only advantage is to remove some of the movement. For us it doesn't get it all but it does help quite a bit. It doesn't get rid of the up and down movement on the suspension, though. We recently installed scissor jacks just behind the rear wheels and that eliminates the up and down movement.

Interesting observations. I bought a tripod and have only used it once. Couldn't really see that it made much difference. Infact, I'd be happy to sell it if someone came by that wanted it. Having said that, I believe traier configuration has a great deal to do with the effect of these devices. I get a lot of help out of wheel chocks. Others I have talked to don't seem to get much help from them. I guess it is like cooking--if yhou like it, use more. If you don't like it, use less.

Dave and Victoria, if I recall I saw your names on the list to attend the rally. Maybe you could lay it out under the overhang with a for sale sign, at the rally.

Steve,
Good idea. Maybe we need a central posting for things like this. A good ice breaker if nothing else.

We've used a kingpin tripod for a couple of months now. It does really take out alot of movement in our rig.

We've never used slide supports but have wondered about the dining / couch slide as it seems that it could use a bit more support at times.
