drilling in floor/ceiling joists

Hi all, I was thinking of mounting a drop down tv mount in the basement, Has anyone drilled the aluminum ceiling joist in the basement for any type of mountings? Does this affect anything structural?
Thank you

Wasn't a problem for my 2010. Haven't done anything like that to the new one yet.

Why not screw some plywood to the bottom of the joists to spead out the weight and then secure the drop down mount to the plywood.

I have a swing out arm attached to the back wall closest to the door. It has been fine for 3 years of heavy use. I have always been leary of drilling into the aluminum joists, but not sure how valid my concerns are. Aluminum tends to crinkle wherever there is a dimple.

As a builder I would screw 1\2" plywood across to at least two of the floor joists to support & spreed the weight of the TV and mount out. The aluminum is not that thick and bends very ease. How big of TV are you putting in there?

I have a 32 inch tv on a swing arm now, I was going to screw a piece of plywood to the aluminum joists and mount the drop down mount to the plywood so it would be centered in the basement opening. I just didn't want to drill in the aluminum joist if it was going to compromise the structure.

I have drilled into the floor joists and side wall aluminum studs to hang small items. The aluminum is extremely thin, so be sure to go the plywood base route that has been talked about.

I attached some wood to the aluminum by using some liquid nail type material for construction. I then screwed a tube to carry extra sewer hose. Home Depot has it. Very strong bonding material.

Don't understand the 'extremely thin' joists & rafter bit. I've used self-tapping screws to mount several things on them and they certainly were NOT thin! (But then, I've a 2010 model . . )

As long as you fill the hole with a screw it should not weaken it. I am a retired Ironworker, not an engineer but that's what I was told. You should use stainless steel screws when attaching to aluminum, mild steel can cause corrosion

I have drilled and screwed into them many times. They are not a structural part or the camper frame. They are simply part of what supports the bedroom/bathroom floor
