Finned Differential covers

Just curious how many have upgraded to the finned aluminum differential covers on their tow vehicles.
Prior to installing the Mag Hytec covers on the 3500, I made a 6 hour pull and checked the differential temp with an inferred gun. The temps were re checked after making the same pull with the Mag Hytec covers installed. The temp was reduced by 42 degrees.
I have been thinking about adding one on the transmission as well.

I have one on my transmission. I don't know which one and never checked the temperature before I put it on. I do keep a check on transmission temperature. It is finned and added 8 quarts of oil. It had to help. The thing that keeps transmission temperatures down is to run fast enough to keep it locked up. When I can't do that on a gravel road I put the truck in low four wheel drive.

Yep that for sure is the key to keep temps down on the Trans,on My Allison When climbing a hill I keep it in the 2200-2500 RPM range but sometimes it still gets a little hot for my taste in Hot weather so next trip I will be getting a larger finned Trans Pan as I read on the D-max Forum they do help(about 40 degrees cooler) and I'm sure it would help on the Ram Aisin trans as well, for 300 bucks a 40 degree Difference in trans temp is worth it to me

According to Mark(a retired Ford tranny engineer...on the Superduty Forum)....he says the finned trans pan will not help with cooling but the extra fluid does.

This Ford engineer knows what I had suspected. An extra 8 quarts of fluid can't hurt. Keeping the transmission locked up really helps. With my tuner it locks up at 45 MPG instead of the stock 55. Big difference but the EGT really goes up when the engine is lugging so you haft to keep the transmission locked up and the RPMs up also.

Someone can do some additional research to check me, but as far as I know, the TorqShift transmission (2008-2010 Ford Super Duty) stays locked when in the tow haul mode. This is why engine braking happens at any speed when tow haul is engaged.

Funny Ford guy said that, my F450 came with finned cover from factory ! My previous truck did not find that way. I added one because it looked good ! Lol

My 2013 ram came with the fin cover already. But i think you have to have the aisin trans to get it.

On my old truck the original trans finally gave up. I had it rebuilt by a guy that built trans for race trucks. He beefed it up and put synthetic oil in. I also had a larger oil pan put on(3 more quarts of oil) the pan had small tubes that ran through the pan front to back, so the air could flow through, that and with a Tru Cool heavy duty trans cooler the trans temp ran way lower
