Chevy/GMC speed

I have a F350 with a V-10 gas, looking at getting a new diesel. Just came up the Grapevine on 5 in Ca. (going south), about a 5% grade. Top speed was about 40 mph. What can I expect this will be with a diesel? What kind of MPG can expect? Thanks Ron

I'm surprised you got up to 4o MPH up the Grapevine with the V10(must be an older lighter Monty or a High Country)) I had a 2000 F350 V10 gas and Loved the motor BUT going up the passes with my 2012 13.5K 5th wheel for the first time with it WAILING at 5000 RPM and getting 7MPG the next week I traded it for a 2004 LB7 Duramax and it did alot better with power and MPG at 11-13MPG and 19-21 MPG UNLOADED(crazy good) But still needed more power when I bought my heavier 2015 Monty so I bought a 2007 LBZ Duramax and get about the same MPG but WAY better power and go up most Passes at 50+ no problem UNLESS I'm in Utah or Colorado at 13K feet and 100 Degree weather then I will poke along at about 45 MPH,Do yourself a favor and Ditch the V10 great Motor but not the right tool for the job on these bigger Monty's AND PLEASE do not bother with a 6.0 Powerstroke go to any Ford Forum and see why That is why I turned trader and went the tried and true Duramax/Alison Combo

I have a 2012 F-350 6'-10" box SRW with the 6.7 diesel. It pulls our 3610 at 14,200 pounds like a dream. I think it would pull the trailer upside down. The only way you could tell it was upside down would be from the sparks coming from it. These new diesels are nothing short of amazing.

How fast do you wont to go up a 5% grade, 50, 60, 70, 80, no problem. Some say they get 12 MPG follow me and you will not get near that. Your mileage will depend on how fast and where you go. A new deesel will put a smile on your face you may even IOI as you pass a V10.

Concur about the 6.0. Had a 2006 F250 with a 6.0 diesel when I got my 3791RD. Worked fine with SOB. With 11 ft longer and 5000 lbs heavier, airbags helped keep a level ride but the truck/engine/rear end ratio (3.73) combo was at its limit towing the Montana. The tow/haul mode helped but it took way to long to get up to speed. With my new F350 with the 6.7 diesel, it's almost like I'm not pulling anything.

Hi

We just did a 2,000 mile trip Our 2009 Duramax pulling the Montana gave us 11 MPG average for the entire trip on 1,800 miles of level road and 200 miles of mountain 6% grades. We never use the truck lanes we are always able to maintain the speed limit on the grades. Our gross weight is 23,300 LBS. In 2010 we drove California to Seattle and thru the mountains to Spokane and were able to maintain the speed limit on all grades.

I get 17MPG on level roads bobtail.

The truck now has 163,000 miles on it and the most engine maintenance I have performed is normal service and one set of glow plugs installed yesterday. The only truck maintenance has been brakes last month before we went on the last trip.

Agree that newer ones will tow better, but you've also got the DEF issues. I've a loaded '06 F350 6.0, 4.10 rear end, that had 28k miles on it three years ago when I bought it (seriously cheap too!). It's had some age issues (high pressure oil line failure, AC wiring issues), but has hauled our 15.6k GVW Monty out to and all over AZ and NM, and last year through Denver, Ogden & Carson City to SF and the coast and never under 55 mph. Won't get us anywhere fast, but it does get us there. Oh, and I had the coolant system flushed and put an after market coolant filter on it right after buying it. Still will be money ahead if something really big blows.

To WaltBennett:
I'm sure my issue was the 3.73 gears. Not a great towing gear for heavy loads. New truck has 4.30 gears. Will pull tree stump.

Not sure what you're asking related to the title of the thread, but if you haven't driven a truck with the 6.7 diesel you're in for a nice surprise. I'm getting 11-12 towing between 15-16,000 with the Monty and 19-21 unhitched. I'm very pleased from a 9000 lb truck and have never been at a lack for power or maintaining speed.
