Middlebury Hardwood Products in Middlebury, IN does the Hickory Edition cabinets. We had a session with them at the Fall Rally. They have what sounds like a very impressive production line for the stain and finishing process.

Try 574-825-9524 for a contact number. It might be possible to get some stain from them, but it may be kind of cost prohibitive to ship as it is considered a hazardous material.

Sorry I can't be of more help on your darker woodwork.

Our local paint store matched the wood color in our previous Montana by adding color to lacquer. Applying stain to wood produces a lot of variance in the wood color. Most factory finishes are a clear finish with color added which makes the finish wood color much more uniform. If you take a door to a good paint store (not a home center), they should be able to make a clear finish that will match.

The Hickory Edition does not use a tinted laquer like the earlier models. It is a fully automated production line of sprayed stain, sealer, and finish coat process. Once the doors are put on the belt, no human touches them until they come out the other end completely finished, cured, and dry. It starts out with the doors back side up, and flips them over somewhere in the process.

The Middlebury rep said that they do limited hand rubbed finishing on some of their products, but I am not sure which, if any, of the Montana stuff it would be. They only do the cabinets though, someone else does the slide out fascia boards, chairs, etc.

Aha! That's why in our new 2010 Montana Hickory Edition the cabinet doors don't match some of the other finishes. We had a cabinetmaker tell us once when we were concerned about matching a golden oak not to worry too much about it. He said all oaks will blend together. It works in our Montana.

Thanks to all of you for the info. I will make some phone calls and also try the local paint store. I made a "boo-boo" on the medicine cabinet in the bathroom and need to fix it. OBTW, do not put one of those night light things with the perfume stuff in it near the wood of your cabinetry, it will cause damage Fortunately, for me, my Uncle is a painter by trade and can help me make the repair.
