Who's mounted a generator on the rear

I KNOW the trailer hitch is a joke and am not at all planning on using it. My neighbor is a professional welder though (!) and I've opened a discussion with him about making a platform that would be welded to the two stub frames used for the 'hitch' at minimum. This would hold something the size of our HF 4kw peak generator (secured appropriately). He's pretty confident he can fabricate what's needed, but I'm wondering what anyone else has had made or DYI'ed.

I'd call Keystone and talk to them. Find out if the Montana frame can take the weight and bouncing you get in the back of any trailer. Your welder might be able to make a perfectly fine platform and attach it to the frame. But the bottom line is can the frame handle it?

There are a few that has done that with no problem. One person even used the hitch on the back of the truck to mount one. The only problem I see with that is when you are not towing you might have a risk of someone backing into it.

I will be interested in what you work out as I want to do the exact same thing. I have looked at the two wheel add-on system that attaches to the frame but will pivot up and down - Cannot remember the name but has swivel wheels so you can backup.

anyone used one of these units?

I made the 2 inch tube that goes under the camper is 4 ft. so if I change campers I will be able to adapt any rear cap. Yep all 3 run in parallel and per like kittens with both a/c`s on.

I have a cargo carrier on the back of my 3980 and have since 2005. I carry a Honda 3000. Have travelled over 60,000 miles and not one problem.

As gitrdun posted, many Montana's have the fold down platform on the back of the 5er so I have to believe that the frame can carry the weight. I think having 3-4 foot rails under the camper attached to frame would spread the load out. Still on the back, but not such a cantilever weight.

Bshgto - How heave are the 3 gens?

So 6000 Watts total, I have to assume a parallel kit on two for 4000 watts on one leg and 2000 watts on the other leg custom wired into a 50A female. Or a 30A/20A to 50Amp Y cord with the 30A plugged into 30A parallel adapter and 110V 20A on Y plugged direct into 3rd generator? Or do they make a triple and split legs in a kit going into a 50A Female?

I questioned the airflow until I see it is open top and bottom with lid up. Very nice.

Do you ever run the gen while traveling to cool the rv? Is it a 1 1/4 hitch?
