Model 2955 RL Height

We purchased a 2955RL Montana this year and have been really enjoying the unit. Unfortunatly the unit height is listed at 12ft 9inches at the a/c unit. This means I severly limited to the routes I can take to get to major highways, due to bridge height restrictions. I just measured the unit and found that the height is more like 12' 3". I was wondering if they measured to the optional a/c unit which would be more toward the front end of the 5th wheel. Has anyone out there actually measured there 2955RL unit height? If so, what did you find?
Thanks for any help you can give. Looking forward to seeing some of you at the Rally next month....

I also had the same concern about height. I wanted to make sure it would fit under the metal awning I had built. The dealer measured it before I left the lot. It came in at 12ft 8in. Or so they said. So far I have not had any problems with height on the roads I have travled.

Welcome aboard.

Roger and Sally --Looking forward to seeing you at the rally next month too! Hubby measured our Monty when we brought her home a few months ago. If I remember correctly, it came in at 12'11". I don't think the Monty's are higher than the semi tractor/trailers that are on the road. So I would think it would be a rare situation where you would have a bridge clearance problem. Hope this helps.

Do you have the low profile a/c (penquin) or the regular 15,000 BTU dometic? That could make a slight difference.
Recently made a trip to the East coast from Texas with our 2955RL without any problem. We did stay in 2 camp grounds that were a bit of a problem due to low limbs.

Not an answer to your question, but, I happened to note that the Pennsylvania Turnpike limits all units, big rigs and 5ers, had to be less than 13 foot 6 inches. They had some kind of scanner at that heighth and if you set that baby off, you were not allowed on the pike. We got through no problem. We figure if it is 13 foot or less we are gonna start worrying.

SO, how did you guys measure the heighth, any tricks you can pass on??

go to the tallest area on the roof. take a long broom handle or good 1x1 and have someone hold it out over the edge of the coach. go back down and measure from the stick to ground.

Our 3295RK measured out within two inches of the published height. We don't have the second AC. Are you saying there are a lot of low-height bridges in your particular area? We've not run into many in our travels, very few actually. The Motor Carriers Atlas has a list of low-clearance locations for each state. It's available at truck stops, barnes and noble, etc.

I have an extending bamboo fishing pole marked at the height of our rig in case I need to measure clearance. I had to do that just one time, in a CG with a low hanging electrical wire. We could clear ok but it sure looked low to me.

Thanks for the measuring stick idea, Steve. A great idea. I went under a CG power line a while that looked pretty low. I just creeped through with gritted teeth, and made it. I'll be carrying a stick from now on.

Leo & Christine, if you get the sectioned pole that can be extended it fits very nicely in the basement. The other day we got set up in an overnight site and the next morning I noticed an electrical wire sitting on the top of the AC casing. I could have sworn it was higher than that and neglected to check further. My mistake. I should have used the pole.

A broom, (which you probably already have), and a calibrated human being (me) can sweep the cobwebbs off a 13 foot ceiling....the 5er being 12ft 3, it's quick, cost effective and works.

We have been around the country twice this past 12 months....lowest bridge we saw on any major road was 13-6. That is not just interstate highways...we like the smaller roads. We are 12-9....I figure any bridge lower than 13-6 merits a slow travel through, anything below 13 is a "don't even try it". Have seen only one of those on any US or State numbered route. I believe there may be some in isolated New England areas or maybe VA / WVa, although we didn't find any during our travels there.

There is a Trucker's Highway Map book which lists, by state and highway number, all the bridge/overpass heights below 15'. Fine for planning, and could save encountering an unexpected problem somewhere.

We did elect to not take the Monty through the tunnel on the main road from Zion Nat Park to Bryce Canyon. Just too tight a fit all around. Probably couyld have made it OK, but I try not to do "probably" where safety/structural damage is a factor.

Other than that, no problem of any sort in over 13K towing.

Safe Travels!
