Replacing alternator

it is about time that i replace my alternator and i am wondering if I go to a 200 amp alternator that it will make much difference in charging my 5th wheel???? To get any benefit would i have to modify my wiring back to my trailer?

Currently I have a chevy 2006 diesel with a 145 amp alternator.

I see no need to go with a bigger alternator. The one you have was working. What I would do is buy an alternator from GM. It will be the last one you will need. If you buy one from a parts store it will probably last a year if so and could let you down far from home.

The only reason one would need to upgrade like that would be if you had a lot of extra electronics, lights, or other electrically powered gear in your truck that you needed to run a lot. Otherwise you really don't need it.

Eddie, you say it is "about time" to replace it. Are you having a problem or are you preventatively replacing it?

ruined battery and voltage is below 13.80 when running. so, at 220K miles i think it will be replaced.

How is the belt and idlers. You might replace them to. They can let you down as fast as an undertaker.

I would recommend having the system checked. A sulfated battery can mimic a weak alternator. The gauge on the dash is reading battery voltage, if the batteries are incapable of taking the 14.6 volts or so that the alternator puts out due to sulfation, the gauge will read low.
