50 amp plug off-set

Hey everyone, just picked up our new 305rl, I installed a 50 amp service at the house and it plugs in fine to the box but when i plug female end into the 5th wheel the plug is off-set 90 degrees putting a great strain onto the plug due to the weight of the cable. Can i take the receptacle apart at the back of the 5th wheel and rotate it down 90 degrees so the cable hangs straight down? Has anyone else encountered this?

That is exactly what others have done when the receptacle on the rig is installed wrong. We were fortunate that it was installed correctly on ours. Don't know if they ever connect a power cord at the factory, but they sure must at the dealers, and if they did on yours and didn't fix it, why? We would not have known there was a problem initially, as the plug is straight, and it wasn't until I purchased a right angle adapter that I would have seen a problem if there was one, but it was right.

Our 340bh is the same way. Stupid that this leaves the factory wrong.

We did the opposite. Both of our Montana's were installed correctly, but that didn't match the adapter we use so there is no strain on the cord. We rotated both of them without issues.

yes mine is 90 dergees off also. guess what I am doing tomorrow.

Just need to figure out how to rotate it

I assume you are referring to a Camco (or other supplier) 55572 90 degree adapter (https://www.amazon.com/Camco-55572-L.../dp/B005SB6TJC )


Yes Montana installs the female receptacle on the trailer with the ground plate off by 120 degrees. It is very simple to remove the plug assembly and rotate the female portion counter-clockwise to the 8 o'clock position rather than the 12 o'clock one. That way the plug will hang down as wanted.

OK, simple fix........
If your ground clip is located on the top of the inlet(like mine was):

remove the 4 screws that hold the cover onto the camper

pull out the cover and some wire

notice on the back of the cover, the plug looks like a regular male headed cord

remove the 3 screws that hold the cord head from the cover

turn the cover to the right 1/3

put the 3 screws back in that hold the cord head onto the cover

put the 4 screws that hold the cover back onto the camper

your done....

And i would buy the 'Dog Bone' Carl has pictured. This takes the strain off of your power cord by allowing the power cord to hang straight down. Less chance of having a bad connection.

Mine came from the factory wrong and it is yet another thing on my very long list to fix! No need for the dog bone if you have the 90 degree main cord. At least I got that from factory

Hey Carl, thanks again, just came in from rotating the shore plug like you suggested and it worked perfectly! Also checked lead connections while apart, glad i did as they were a little loose. the plug hangs as close as possible to straight up and down thus relieving the strain on the receptacle. saved me from buying the dog-bone. Hope i can pay forward some useful information to someone as you have done for me.
