How do I copy & paste...

How does one copy & paste on a smart phone ?
I actually copied & pasted the title of this thread but often have trouble getting the paste icon to show up. Does anyone have a clue to this madness?
Is there a certain sequence That has to be followed?

On edit: I think I have it figured out but...
It's really going to take some getting used to.

On my iPhone, I press and hold what I want to copy, press that and then press where I want to paste.

I think that is what I'm doing. It just doesn't seem to be consistant in how it responds. Sort of frustrating at times not to mention anything about bifocals.
