Not sure what hitch

I’m in the process of buying a 2018 Montana 3721RL and I have a 2019 Ford 250 super duty truck with a standard bed (6’ 7”) Do I need a slider hitch or can I use an fixed hitch. Also I could use some info on what brand to buy

First off, Welcome to the forum.
I was not familiar with that model, so I looked it up. Its gross weight is 16,750lbs. I don't mean to beat you up, and know people do it all the time, but that fifth wheel will have a pin weight around 3350-4187lbs and is well beyond the weight rating of any 3/4 ton truck. At the very least, you need a 1 ton truck. To me its clearly in Dually territory.

You don't NEED a slider hitch to tow it down the road, however if you have to turn/maneuver sharply, you could strike the cab of the truck with the campers front cap. Hence a slider would be advisable.

As far as brands go, you will get a million opinions on that. You need at least an 18k hitch. I have a curt Q24 and am very happy with it. You can spent anywhere from say $300 for a used hitch to $3500 for a air ride trailer saver hitch. A lot of peeps use pullright/B&W companion/Anderson etc. All depends on how deep your pockets are. LOL

We also have a Curt Q24 and really like. Far superior to our old Reese. If I had a short bed, a slider would be a must for me.

B&W for me I like how there is a handle that operates the jaws and the handle has to be closed and locked in place. I don't have to look to make sure the pin is captured. I have a SB and there is enough adjustment in the B&W that mine doesn't hit the cab.
Some guys swear by the Anderson because it's light weight. To me that means weak. Sure there are some strong metals out there and Anderson may use them it's just something that only weighs 35 Lbs that bothers me.

I agree that Anderson hitch looks Mickey Mouse to me. Maybe okay for a lighter trailer but I would never use that on these behemoths

There are many great hitches on the market. Find one in your price range that is convenient for you to purchase. They all will pull your camper.

A B&W hitch allows for forward and rearward adjustment for cab clearance. Mine works fine on a shortbed.

I can do this all day.... while using an Anderson you need to stop the roto flex head from tilting.

There is not one product out there that is perfect. At least tell the entire story of the Anderson failing. If they failed continually I’m sure the product would get pulled and lawsuits would be flying. We all have our personal preference and of course we will defend our purchase but remember most not all of the time it will be user error

Pulling the emergency brake cable is the same as slamming on the brakes or using the brake controller hard while Towing. It should not destroy a hitch like that.

Makes me wonder what would happen if a head-on collision was to occur. Would it fail in the opposite direction and slam the camper against the back of the truck. ?

Hmm let me look into further for you. I’m sure there is more to the picture. I figured you posted the picture you would have known the situation. My memory fails me.

Looks like some are blaming the roto pin box, some have said the brakes were pulled while the Dually was accelerating. Others state .... who knows.....

My Anderson works for me, which is my opinion. Failures happen like I said.

No I did not read into it further. It was a link from another post that I went to when I saw the picture of it.

I'm not doubting anyone's decision on which hitch to use. That's why we have so many choices nowadays . I just feel that in an extreme situation the Andersen hitch would fail much easier and something built more sturdy.

I can't find the picture but my buddy sent me a picture of a hugh Luxe fifth wheel that hit a bridge and ripped 3/4 of the roof completely off and it was still connected to the truck.

I’m sure there are stories both ways, again we all fall into a self serving attitude when we defend what we purchased, and I get it. Having 3 spinal surgeries I can’t lift 200+ lb hitch from the bed so I went a different route. I could have went with the pullrite version but I chose this one. For my personal situation my Mickey Mouse hitch was what I needed in order to remove the hitch.

The standard 5th wheel hitch is obviously the standard when it comes to towing it has been around for quite some time from big rigs to 5th wheels. I’m not an engineer but I’m sure for the most part all choices will be safe considering the amount of testing that they go through.

To the OP your decision will rest on something tried and true or something new which happens to be very light weight. Choose what best suits your needs.

I agree choice is certainly up to each one of us for whatever situation. Fortunately my truck primarily just toes the fifth wheel I don't need it generally for other purposes so the hitch 99% of the time stays in it.

I have seen that video before I'm from a downward Force it is certainly strong. But it's a lateral Force that I would be worried about.

I hate assuming but I would think it would be similar to standard hitches. I tried searching and didn’t find much information. I’m sure we have some engineers here that can expand on this. As far as the lateral force with the Anderson I don’t have any worries, I also don’t tailgate and drive it like I stole it...

Hopefully and actual engineer can add some information, I’m curious !!
