Toilet Seal
Our seal in the toilet won’t hold water any longer, it like the plunger ball or what ever you call it needs to go farther into the seal.
1. Is there an adjustment
2. Can the seal be replaced
Thanks

The seal can be replaced and it helps to clean along the rim and use vegetable oil etc. to lube it. My guess would be that you have a Tetford toilet. If so that's just one of the problems that seem to be fairily common. Others are more serious. If it is a Tetford, the only real fix is to replace it with a Dometic. On the old rig I replaced seals, after the flush mechanism exploded replaced the toilet and then the seal leak started again so I replaced it with a Dometic and no problems for the next six years of full timing. Now the new rig is a year old and the toilet won't hold water again. A Dometic will be in our future again, we just have some other major mods in line in front of it.

If it's Thetford toilet the best repair is to remove to a dumpster and install a Dometic 310 or 320 toilet!

Dan, you can do temporary repair by taking an "old toothbrush" and open the valve and run the toothbrush and gently move it around the whole black rubber seal. I do that about once a week to make sure there is nothing stuck under the gasket. DQDICK suggested using vegetable oil on the gasket but I've found out that plumbers grease or even Vaseline works best. I don't know how you store your unit but I always leave some water in the bowl of the toilet to make sure the gasket stays soft and does not dry out while the unit is not in use. The next step is do as Dick says and purchase a Dometic 310 or 320 and replace yours with one of them.

Thanks for the info, I’ll give it a go. I stay in mine through the week for work and I do keep water in it....until it stops holding water lol. I’ve looked at the Dometic so will see if this will work.

Easy thing is.....turn the water off......drain the bowl......use a rubber glove and a handi-wipe or nice clean towel.....make sure the seal is clean and then use vasoline or vegetable oil on the seal. I did mine about 2 months ago and use dielectric grease since I had nothing else to use. Main thing is....keep that little black seal(like an o-ring) clean and lubed.

Yep. Replaced the seal and it held water for three days. Tried plumbers grease and that worked for a few days. We now have a Dometic 310. Well, at least it made three years before it crapped out!

Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. I clean our toilet bowl monthly and the seal with a toilet bowl brush and have had no problems going on 12 months fulltime. OEM Thetford.

Put a dometic 320 in our 2010. Our 2015 has two thetfords both have been trouble free including 6 month snowbirding in Florida each and every winter. Go figure. I watch carefully, liked the dometic.

From the sounds of it, the Thetford's work just fine until they don't.

I did this and it has worked, but the Dometric will be the replacement before we head to Ca in December.

I do the same but a year and a half on our 17 it started with this problem. It’s resolved for now but I will be installing a Dometric very soon

My new Dometic 310 has a bit of a hit and miss on the seal. I haven't treated it yet, but I will in the next few days.
In CW today I saw a Thetford cleaning product specific to treating toilet seals. Anyone have any feedback on whether this product is any good? (Hopefully better than their toilets.)

We have been full timing for 5 years and used to be just like you. All you need is to maintain it. Then one night, It failed and flooded the camper and at THAT exact moment when Im standing in a 1/2 inch of water is why didnt i listen to all others about this. DO NOT TRUST THAT AQUA FLOOD IT WILL FAIL. Now we have the 320 for 6 months and now no more problems as this toilet works perfect.

Both the Dometic 310 and 320 have a seal which needs periodic cleaning to keep it from leaking. Once a year or so clean it to remove any "junk" on the bottom side. It pops out very easily and reinstall is also easy but you do have to take care to get it positioned in the groove properly.

Just replaced the 6 month old Telford with a 320 Dometic yesterday. Easy installation. Home Depot has a shark bite connection with a 1/4 turn shot off and a 20” flexible toilet connection. The toilet connection is a click it. Like a gas cap when it is tight enough it starts clicking
