Alaska spent two Months

Just spent two months in Alaska, first time. Have all kinds of good info for anyone wanted to make the trip. If you have not done this yet you should. Nothing compares to it. Yes diesel was our biggest expense but it was worth it.

If you get the opportunity to make a national or regional rally there'll be plenty of folks who would want to hear directly about your experiences.

Dave & Liz, Did you do the trip by yourself, with a group, or a Tour Company?? Four rigs in our GoodSam Chapter (including us) have signed up with Fantasy RV Tours to do Alaska, then the Western Parks, and ending up at the Balloon Fest in New Mexico in 2014.

We are presently in Seward, Alaska. We entered Canada May 28 and will get back to the lower 48 by ferry August 24. This is our second trip to Alaska in 8 years. Traveling here is marvelous, bit not with out it's problems. To read more about both aspects you can read our daily blog www.5thwheelwanderings.blogspot.com

Having lived all over Alaska for the last 13 years (we finally escaped, or as Alaskans put it, we were pardoned) I can tell you RV'ing in AK is a much different experience than down in the lower 48. Supplies are limited and much more expensive. There are no Camping Worlds and most of the RV dealers there have lousy service. But the beauty makes it all worth it. We have stayed all over and Seward on 4th of July was always our highlight. Luckily, we didn't have to drive the wonderful Alaskan Highway to camp all those years! It's very much a place worth visiting, just make sure you go prepared.

I would be more than happy to answer any questions anyone has, just shoot me a PM.

Pugtracker,

We have been looking at a trip to Alaska for a long time (its on our bucket list) but we are concerned with the condition of the roads and the effect they would have on the Monty. Did you have any problems with suspension...things coming loose...carrying water...frame flex? We have even considered buying a small camper to make the trip in to save the Monty.

So, how did you fare in the trip

sorry i missed your question. We did it alone and were very glad we did not do a tour group as the freedom of movement was awesome. we enter in TOK and just went where ever we wanted.Tok has and awesome state and federal visitor center that has the information you would need. The state parks are easy access. No hook in most of them. They have hand pump wells after 15May. If the pump is not hooked up there is no charge at the state parks. FairBanks has a has a state park with water and electric. There are federal parks that are also available, might check the Government reservation as weekends are book ahead but not to the point you cant find a spot. We did eneter canada the first of may which was nice as the crowds are not there. The canadian rockys are awesome. At this time the bears are waking up and easy to see. The provicial parks in canada are not fully open and if the gates open it be used. Again only well pumps for water. We never had and problem getting water or dumping something always was down the road. We brought two 6 gallon water jugs and a bladder. never used the bladder, just the jugs. We did have broken leaf springs, but the roads were not the issue, our rig is a 2004 and they were tired. The roads were very good. Top of the world highway roads can be rough and I do not recommend. They open in later, may so going in that way you would have to call. people do it, but i hear it can be rough. We went to. We went to Seward, Homer, Valdez, Kenia, whittier,Anchorage, Denali, Willard bay, many of the Canadian Provs. It was nice have having to be on someones schedule. Oh as far as the ballon fest yes go. We did two years ago and we stayed at the Ballon Rv Across from the launch field. If really depends on the wind in the moring whe n the ballons go up they will be flying right over your heads and landing right near your tralers lol lots of fun. We had no hook ups but Generator is ok. Water is available. Hey ask away If we can help ya out.Oh Gas OUCH!!! but it was worth it

The roads through Canada are not a problem, im sure they have there frost heaves but slow works fine. As far a s Alaska, the roads are better than many places we go to in the lower 48. The top of the world highway is a 50/50 shot on what the condition of the dirt road is. You can drive to Chicken AK from TOK on mostly all paved roads, than turn around as the road is all gravel if you continue. Leaf springs get broken in the lower 48 as well as AK. Its not as easy getting repairs sometimes but we never had a problem with AK bushiness folks helping us out. The Loop in Ak is well maintained. And the best thing is you can Camp anywhere you can pull off the road. As its mostly state property. If its not posted your good.
