I'm afraid all us "good ol' Southern boys" need all that translation which Glenn so helpfully provided. Now as for purple hull peas, turnip greens, and corn bread ......

Well seeing how it's snowing like crazy tonight, we will celebrate this weekend. Why we got married in central NY in Feb. I don't know. Young and foolish I guess.

Paczki, huh? You all sure have some strange food names up there. Before our visit to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan this summer I thought a "pastie" is something you used to see in a men's club . Now, a paczki! And they don't even pronounce it the way it looks!

In Pennsylvania Dutch Country they are called Fasnachts
[ FAHS-nahkt ] A yeast-raised potato pastry that's deep-fried like a doughnut. Fasnachts were originally made and served on Shrove Tuesday to use up the fat that was forbidden during Lent. They're diamond-shaped and often have a slit cut down the center before frying. They first appeared in Pennsylvania, though there is some argument whether the actual origin is German or Dutch.
The "fat" they used was good old LARD(*). You knew you had a good batch when the bakery put them in a brown paper bag and by the time you got them home the bag was saturated in oil.
(*)Lard--The white solid or semisolid rendered fat of a hog.
A Great scource of cholesterol.

Congratulations Chuck & Carol. We will celebrate 44 years in November. The 4th to be precise. Any anglo history buff willl know that November 4th in England is the day before Guy Fawkes day which is also known for the fireworks that are set off. So I can claim that the day after we were married the fireworks started!
We also have a wonderful food specially made on Shrove Tuesday - English Pancakes fried in LARD! Taste delicious, put about a pound and a half round the waistline and if Diana did not serve them up both I and the kids would "divorce" her! Although the kids don't live at home anymore the phone did ring from them to ask for the recipe!
