Diesel additive report....Eye opening......
I hate it when fact interferes with what I believe.
This is good information.I got to find a different additive..

Rich,
Me too. I've always been sold on Power Serve and/or Lucas Fuel Treatment. But the report backs up what I've been feeling all along. The jobbers SHOULD add lubricity, but do they?

I also have used both and the eye opener was that Power service does not meet the spec on lubricity and Lucas is even worse. The cetane rating is OK. So now what???

I have preferred to use Stanadyne, but I see it is pretty far down on the list. I think I might try the Opti-lube, as it claims to separate the water, not emulsify it.(method GM recommends) BTW, Rich, thanks for posting that!

Rich,
Thanks for finding this. It was reported in a Consumer Reports magazine, but I have not been able to find my copy and refrained from saying anything because of uncertainty on my part. Now I have saved that PDF file. Thanks.

I have been using the Opti-Lube Summer Blend in my Freightliner for a while now. Its older, before ULSD design, getting more difficult to find regular deisel, did have to replace all the flex fuel hoses after having used the new fuel, they all started leaking, was told this would probably occur. Don't know that I can tell any difference ie; fuel mileage change, engine sounds, so forth, makes me feel better that I am trying. A long time deisel mechanic recommended Stanadyne Purple, to a friend of mine. I kinda like to go with some test results. I have a new Bowtie HD3500 D/A, etc, that I haven't decided what to use if anything. Decisions, decisions.

We also saw a similar test on Consumer reports some time ago that came to the same conclusions.Think it was a different testing group. When we saw this report I though it met the .. 'verify data from two independent sources' requirement to validating data so I think the data is pretty good. Went to Wally mart this AM and they carry none of the top 9 products.. I am wondering which is the most critical for engine performace....cetane rating or Lubricity..My guess is lubricity ???? more searching is required. Will have to try to find the opti-lube...
What irratates me the most is that the manufactureres have not been completly honest with us on these new diesel motors.

I'm wondering what the big rigs that are transporting the supplies to the oil and gas rigs up in Alaska and Canada use! You see them on specials on the travel and discover channels! What ever they use would be my choice of an additive! Anyone know what they use?

Okay - Help me out here, the way I read this study is 2% bio deisel has the best lubricisty. Does this mean that if I use 2% bio deisel it is as good as using an additive. The 2% is available around here. Now my dealer says the bio deisel is hard on fuel filters and will cause you to need to change them more often. Of course that is a small price to pay for longer engine life.

There are two critical parts to this..Cetane rating and lubricity. Some do one,,some do the other..some do both..as opti-lub XPD but it is pricy....of course so was my truck...

It's all very confusing. I think I'll keep doing and adding what I have been doing and adding and what GM says to do and add, (backed by the 100k warranty)...absolutely nothing.

Tom, thats what my Dodge dealer tells me as well. "Do nothing".....being that I have no expertise in this area I do what I'm told. Diesel fuel is expensive enough all ready I don't feel the need to add to it. Of course, the others that do know more about this probably sleep better at night. :-)

I really don't see how we can go wrong. If something bad happens to the engine/transmission, you know their first question will be, "what mods have you put on the engine and what additives have you been using?"
My truthful response will be, "nothing and not one d#@% thing!"

Even if you add Bio-diesel for the lubrication, you will still need to add something for the gel-point; bio-diesel gels at a higher temp than #2 diesel and quite a bit higher than #1 or blended diesel. Very expensive to replace filters when they are gelled!! (expensive anytime but when they are gelled it seems worse )

The Ford manual also says you should not need a additive then recommends the additive to use and the Ford part numbers. So Ford makes the additive that they say you do not need??? However it is a good point to use nothing. As long as you are within the warranty period the manufacturer will repair or replace at no cost to us so we lose nothing. I am just curious and like to have my vehicles running as ...good as they can be. This cetane and lubricity issue in the new diesel motors is a Grey area and there are many independent studies out there that indicate that the new motors need additives..The one posted is a good example..I am no expert but do take heed to what the experts reveal.
To do nothing is as good as using the additive...personal choice.

My dealer recommends the use of the Ford cetane booster. It runs about $6.00 per 125 gallons. It was not tested in the cited report.
