Loud brake noise

I just adjusted my Montana brakes this summer because they were not stopping the unit and needed adjusting. I now have loud squeel when braking. I've always heard that noise is from brake dust. Is there a quicker way to quiet them down other than taking off the drums and washing with brake cleaner? What about blowing out with a shot of air thru the brake adjusting slot? Any suggestions?

Dave It sounds like you might need a brake job! Your signature says have a 2000 model. I don't know how many miles on it but the brake lining is very thin on trailer brakes so It may be down to the metal. Also the magnets may have worn uneven and could be the problem. I would pull the wheels and drums if they haven't been off in awhile and see whats going on. Have you checked the shackle problem? Your trailer is one of the prime candidates for shackle replacement before they fail!!!!

I don't think it is a simple dust problem unless it is brake lining dust? Hard to diagnose by e-mail.

I agree with Don on the brake noise, it's about the only way to see the real problem. If you do it yourself play it safe. Happy Camping

Thanks for the heads up on the shackle problem but I haven't been following that thread. Will read more about it.
I'll also pull the drums and examine the magnets and linings. I thought that would the best thing to do.
BTW only a couple thousand miles on the unit. Mostly highway.

Another possibility is you overtorqued the lugnuts. Get them too tight and it warps the drums and causes a squalling. Been there on that one. Your axle manual or maybe the Montana manual should give the torque values. A good torque wrench would help. I torque mine to 100 lb-ft.

Steve,
I never thought about overtourqued lug nuts causing a squalling sound but we'll see when it stops raining and I get a chance to look at the brakes. Would simply tourquing them to 110 # correct the problem or has the dammage been done and new drums be in order? Thanks for the suggestion.

My brakes did the same thing. I backed off the brake controler a little and the squeeling stopped
