Water Filtration Systems

To All, any help here would be greatly appreciated. We are brand new to the MOC, picking our unit up next weekend (6/10/05). It's a 3500RL, towing with a GMC 2500HD, Duramax, Crew Cab, Short Bed. We are usually 2 adults & 2 teenage boys (before any friends come along).

We're thinking of getting an external water filtration system, what do you think of these and would model would you recommend?

Any help is greatly appreciated.Happy trails to all!

We use a whirlpool whole house filter from Home Depot or Lowe's. We went with the whole house filter intended for stick homes because it passes 6 gallons per minute which does not restrict the water flow to the Montana. I have the model number around here somewhere if you need it. Just about any whole house filter will fill the bill. I looked at those intended for RV use but most restrict the water flow to 3 gpm or less and we didn't want to restrict the flow that much. There are some for RV's that are rated for higher flow.

If you go with one intended for a stick home, like this one, then you need these hose fittings, available at the same stores.

1 - Brass Male Hose to MIP adapter - 3/4" x 3/4"
1 - Brass Female Hose to MIP adapter - 3/4" x 3/4"

I use the same one Steve has, works great, actually got the idea from him.
Flow is good and all. Didnt find it at Home Depot, had to order mine online from Lowes.

We use the inline filter by Camco because of the bacterial filtering. I'm not sure if the household filters do this or not, but would be interested in finding out.

Sounds like a plan, next time we pass Home Depot. Thanks to all for your quick responses!

We bought a whole house filter similar to those listed above at Menards. We use the replaceable carbon, 5 micron filter. Cut the top off of an orange safety cone and set the filter down inside. Got the idea from one I saw in our campground. Total cost was about $22 for cone, filter and cartridge.

We got the Whirlpool model mentioned by Steve. Got it at Lowe's since the Whirlpool website said "sold only at Lowe's" I don't believe that, but there happened to be one close by.

It says "prefilter" on the package, but is the same model mentioned in Steve's original post on the subject.

Make sure the attachment for the outlet side actually is designed for a "hose bib". We got one that "looked about right" but wasn't. Had to go back to get a specific "hose bib" connector. Pitch of the threads was slightly off, and it wouldn't tighten completly.

Best,

We also use the Whirlpool whole house filter....

At present we are just using one in the line but will be adding at least one and possibly 2 before heading to Indiana this September.
AND like patodonn pointed out be sure to get the male and female garden hose adapters. The filter comes standard with 3/4 inch female pipe thread which will NOT connect to your freshwater hose.

Patodonn, I did exactly the same thing with the hose bib and had to make a second trip. The threads were just not quite right.

Ours says "prefilter" also but I was told relates to its positioning in a home's water system. Filters at the source instead of at the destination (water inlet to the house rather than at the faucet, in other words). I do not know if that's accurate but it does make sense, since it is a 'whole house filter.' If this is incorrect, maybe someone here can shed some light.
