OK guys I need advice: Re: Tools to carry?

We are starting long timing in November. I have a shop full of tools and gadgets. My question is- What do I need in the way of tools to fix and prevent all of the problems that I might encounter along the way. Happy retirement (I hope) starts on November the first and I don't want to have to return to work to pay for someone to do the fixes. Thanks to everyone and hope to meet you on the road.

Ha!, I carry as many tools as my wife will let me, have used many of them, you and I need to network!
She drew the line on my Plasma cutter and wire welder.
As far as what you need....basic hand tools, but what comes in handy....all of them you can stuff into your rig. And truck.
Hope to meet you too.

I carry all the basic hand tools which include a rechargeable drill and mostly other mechanical tools (no motors). Lots of wrenches, sockets, hacksaw, hammers, mallets, ax, bow saw, etc.

A good assortment of elecrical connectors, testers, Tapes, crimpers, and fuses, is a good place to start. Good luck and hope you never have to use any of them. Roman

I have a combination tool and fuel tank so I keep all of my tools in there. In the Montana I keep a supply of parts like fuses, misc connectors, wiring, screws, water line and fittings.

In the trailer I have screw drivers, vice grips, pliers, fuses, cordless drill and a crescent wrench. I keep them in a bag in the back of the closet so I don't use cabinet space. I keep a full assortment in the truck because you just never know. Luckily I don't have a wife telling me "you can't have that in the trailer."

I have all of the above plus I found all the largest bolts that I didnt have wrenches for and acquired said wrenches in box/opened end, and sockets. Also a torque wrench, at least a 150 ft/lb. These included bolts on the truck, hitch, and 5er. Two 5 ton bottle jacks and jack stands. The DW wouldn't let me bring my router and raised panel door cutters. I guess I will leave it here in storage and she agreed to leave the scrap booking stuff. But she gets to take the sewing machine and all her quilting stuff. It all works out in the end. The next 4 days will determine the final packout. See ya'll on the road next week... Dave and Betsy

Which ever one you leave behind, that's the one you will need. I carry a set of standard and metric sockets for 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drive. Also carry a set each of standard and metric combination end wrenches, 18-volt 3/8" cordless drill, drimmel tool, 7-1/4' circle saw, Rotozip spiral saw, charger/booster, one gallon shop vac, assortment of pliers, screwdrivers, files, small wire brushes, wire cutters and strippers, duct tape, elec tape, gorrilla tape, tree saw, axe, sharp shooter, machette, 2 Klein 10-in-one combo tools with two sizes of square head, Phillips head and slotted head points, 4 jack stands, 8-ton bottle jack, bolts cutters, Gorilla ladder that extends to 12', set of small computer tools, hammer, small sledge, hot glue gun, and other stuff.

Most of these tools I already had. When I have the opportunity and find the right price, I want to acquire an 18-volt 1/2" cordless impact wrench. I have used a wide array of these tools in fulltimers's applications.

When we go fulltime I plan to just carry OZZ, in a hammock, and pull him out whenever anything seems to need fixing or updating.
(He doesn't know about this so don't tell him just yet, ok?)
I'll get whatever tools he says he needs and let him go at it.
Sounds like a plan to me.

If you have a diesel, include a filter wrench for the fuel filter. You can change that yourself for about a third of what the dealer charges. Plus all of the tools mentioned above. A small electrical meter can help for everything from checking fuses to troubleshooting brake problems. Electrical tape, duct tape, gorilla glue, misc. screw drivers, wrenches, pliers, etc. Best of luck.

Last year we traveled with just a few tools. This year I can fix just about anything that I can understand.

Oh Goodie, from the sounds of what others are packing around it looks like I can tell DW my bags are 'standard' for the longtimers

In addition to those items previously mentioned, I carry a jig saw (a good one that has metal & wood blades), lug wrench, tire chains, shovel, come along, digital VOM, whole bunch of various nails, screws, fuses and solderless wire terminals along with wire, plumbers goop, jb weld, wood glue and 4 20' web tow staps.

Damn-I forgot jumper cables

So far I have managed to avoid carrying a couple hundred lbs of tools. I put a basic assortment of pliers, screw drivers, wrenches (including torq wrench), hammers, hatchet, fuses, meter, etc. in a small tool box. I keep thinking I need to carry my shop with us, but the DW would think better.

For sure, as well as a 1/2" drive breaker bar with 4" (or maybe it's a 6") extender.

Square headed screw drivers or attachments. Keystone used a lot of these special screws, very annoying, I might add.....

Tools?

Here is what works for me.

Keep it basic bud, all the things you would normally have in your tool box and add fuses, bulbs, pressure guage, and a multimeter.

Oh, by the way, I also include in my tool box an Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale, really helps!

Harv
