Battery boxes?
For all of you with more than 1 battery, are you using sealed battery boxes? are you sticking with the sort of sealed boxes with the vent tube? My old rig had 4 batteries in the front compartment with unsealed boxes but seems to have more ventilation. IF your using sealed boxes what brand are they and can they hold group 27 batteries? Thanx for any info.

Lead acid, or "wet" batteries outgas when being charged. Those gasses are explosive. Stick with a vented box.

No co boxes seem to be good, but I switched to agm to get away from wet cells. I use bolted down trays since I don't need ventilation.

When I upgraded from group 24 to group 27, I had to replace the two boxes. A local RV dealer had them in stock, but they are available on Amazon as well as many other places. https://www.amazon.com/rv-battery-boxes/s?k=rv+battery+boxes

Just curious. Are the fumes from a battery heavier than air??
The battery compartment in my rig is vented below yet it has a vented box with the vent hose going up to an outlet at the front of the rig. Seems like you wouldn't need the vent hose if the fumes are heavier than air?
I plan to go AGM as soon as my current batteries wear out but just curious about the above.

You have the hose out the front of the compartment and the vent holes out the bottom of the boxes so air can flow in, through the battery box, and then out the other vent hole. If you only had one air source, you wouldn't get any air flow to clear gases from the batteries in the boxes.

I have been running 2-6 volt and 2-12 volt batteries for over 5 years just sitting in a wooden box I made so they will not move around.
They are out in the open with no venting what so ever. Never been a issue. The front compartments are FAR front sealed and IMHO have more than enough air flowing through to let any gasses escape.
With a sealed box of some kind it would be a PITA to check water levels like I do quite often.

Ok here goes the chemist again. The fumes from a battery are Hydrogen Sulfide. It is colorless, HEAVIER THAN AIR, flammable and poisonous. Since it is heavier than air, I would think that a vent or better yet open bottom on the battery compartment would be the ideal way to prevent buildup of hazardous fumes?? Which begs to question why are all the boxes in the RV industry vented upward? Is the idea to bring in fresh air to displace the fumes? That only works IF there is an opening below that allows for circulation.....

I agree with all of that. Ran 4 12V batts for 13 years in the old rig, and not so much as a speck of rust!!
Thanx for all the input, I installed 2 of them and am going to install a tray above those for 2 more batteries!! Does anybody isolate one of them for genset start????, or for emergency coach 12v if needed???

Just received a NoCo box for 2-6v AGMs that are on order....for over 2 wks...seems like a long time to get Trojans from our local RV dealer. I think he failed to order . NoCo is a really nice well built box. Original box for 2 -12v had extra set of post connections on the lid of the box and had trouble keeping tight. Hated that box, took the lid off and reconnected direct. Maybe get new batts this coming week.

I can get 100 amp hour AGM here in Phoenix from the cartel for fifty bucks each if anyone is interested. I have four of them in my Montana with residential refrigerator and have no problem. Jeff

I ordered one of these off of eBay 4for 4 6v t105 Trojan batteries.
(GCQ-G) Century Plastics Quad 6V Deep Cycle Battery Box - Auto, Marine and RV.
I had to glue in a event on the top and bottom for air ventilation.
Works great.

I made up a box using using a Rubbermaid Roughneck bin. Added a vent to the bottom through the floor and attached the existing vent to the top. The low profile box is perfect for my two HD 6 V golf cart batteries. Has worked great for 10 years now.

In viewing a video about AGM batteries it notes you must use an AGM compliant charger. Are the later model RV's charger's AGM compliant? I presume so since a lot of people note they are using AGM batteries.

Charge voltage of AGM batteries are slightly highers than flooded cells, but not by much. I use a Victron solar controller for my charging needs.
