Why should I inspect the roof?

There are many reasons to inspect the roof occasionally and this weekend while staying outside of Columbus, OH verified that to me. I did not intend to do it, but the Travler was giving me difficulties and up on the roof I went to see if it was anything obvious. Nothing wrong with the Travler but I did find this:

In addition, the front mushroom attic vent had been ripped out as well and the rubber roof around it was torn. Fortunately, we were near a Camping World so a quick stop was planned to get some trusty Eternabond tape. So of course, they did not have it but rather now carry something called Sticknbond roof repair tape. Not having a choice, got it and put it to use on the front seam and as a temporary repair surrounding the attic vent sans mushroom cap. The product seems to be the same so hopefully it will hold (guaranteed for 25 years). Time will tell. Taped the vent shut after repairing the roof. The tape went on easily and I did the entire roof seam across the front of the rig after cleaning everything up with Lacquer Thinner, so that problem is averted as seen here:

Ordered a new mushroom attic vent and lap sealant to complete the repairs when time becomes available. Will have to cut the entire vent out and replace since whatever happened not only took the cap off, but broke the internal attachment for the cap. Why should we inspect the roof? Simply because problems cannot be seen and the results over time could be devastating, glad I found it when I did. And with regards to the Travler problems, it was stuck in search mode (wide open area) and would not lock on to even one satellite. I reset the interface box, reset the SWM module, and one of the resets seemed to be the remedy. My guess would be the interface box.

There are reasons that things happen in a way that seems odd sometime. Just like that "its a good thing i looked at it" or "I had a problem with this and ended up finding that."

Wow, glad you caught that! Outstanding example for doing periodic inspections.

Your rig is a year newer than mine and my attic vents were not all that healthy and of course, hail in wall, sd didn't help the rear one. My plan is to replace both again in three years as they don't seem to last all that long. Dang your roof looks ugly! I think you need to glue that puppy down again...which I am sure you will do soon. I agree 200% with you on frequent checks up on top. Hope all goes well for you bingo. John

Climbed on mine back in the spring and noticed several places around vents, antenna, and such where the caulking was cracking and pulling back. Fixed all that. And in the process noticed my attic vents mushroom caps chalky and brittle. Replaced those. Never ends.

I was surprised I had failed caulking issues off the lot! The manual states to check it every 6 months. I think I need a calendar. How did your vent get MIA tree limb?

Since my attic vents started to oxidize I took them off and gave them 3 coats of Krylon gloss white for plastic. They are no longer yellow and the paint seems to have stopped the solar destruction of the vents till I can get some new ones. I suggest putting several coats on new vents after a bit of sanding to give them some teeth for the paint to hold onto.

Very possible, I noticed a scuff mark on the Travler base which is behind the vent a few feet.

The roof has had the bubbles and wrinkles since it was new. Never presented a problem before, but I may take a wallpaper roller to it to see if it will stick down, if not, will keep an eye on it with regular photographs to see if it changes. Our previous rigs had bubbles and wrinkles as well, and never presented a problem either. I would venture to say with that fake Eternabond on the front edge that the roof will not have a chance to go anywhere.

First thing I did with this new rig was Eternabond the front and rear cap seam, around each vent (after I removed bathroom vent and installed an Fantastic Fan), and around the shower sunroof. Also our warranty requires that the dealer inspect the roof once a year. It's very important to keep up on roof maintenance.
