Kansas City to Seattle

I'm double posting this, hoping to get some tips. A friend will be traveling from Kansas City to Seattle after Christmas with a motorhome towing a Jeep. What is the best route to take and what tips for this trip can you offer her.

Hello and this is a start you might want to edit or take a more direct route but this is a start and don't forget to have them to check the passes coming to Seattle.

Personally, I would take the lower route around Salt Lake and through Idaho with less mountains and potentially less sever weather. And it is only a few miles longer than through South Dakota/Montana. Of course that time of year makes travel a crap shoot regardless. Watch the weather!.

As Carl said, watch the weather. Sometimes it is best to take a colder northern route; I would prefer to deal with snow instead of freezing rain & ice. We will be driving from Colorado to Seattle and back for the holidays (not towing); watching the weather closely.

I agree with Carl with the exception of I would go straight to Portland and then up I 5 to Seattle. Going over the pass on I 90 into Seattle can be treacherous if it’s snowing, by going to Portland there is no pass to go over. Just keep an eye on the weather.

Keep a close eye on the Washington passes. Have chains with you as required by WDSOT.

I've made that round trip about 10 times.
1. Take I-70 from KC to Denver.
2. Denver to Cheyenne, WY. (WARNING: High cross winds year-round. Blowing snow in winter. Have food, water, blankets etc in case caught out in no-man's land. Serious, no joke.
3. Cheyenne to Ogden UT.
4. Ogden to Twin Falls, ID.
5. Twin Falls through Boise into Oregon.
6. Cut north at Hermiston/Umatilla, OR toward Richland, WA
7. Richland, WA to Yakima, WA
8. Yakima, WA to Seattle. Closely watch the Snoqualmie Pass reports for winter snow/closures.
If bad weather at the Snoqualmie Pass:
Don't turn off at Hermiston, Umatilla, OR. Stay westbound on I-84 into Portland, OR and the take I-5 north to Seattle. FLATTER ROUTE!!!!!
