Grants Pass to Crescent City

Has anyone pulled their Monte on 199 from Grants Pass to Crescent City? We are considering going home from Seven Feathers via 101. I know that 101 is not a problem but we have never been on 199 in Oregon. Thanks!

We suggest NO. There are some pretty tight hairpin turns. When we go/leave seven feathers we always go thru Winston then down 101. Even though 101 has some tight areas it is better than 199. Safe travels. 199 can be done, just depends on your comfort level. Teresa

199 has a lot of curves and narrow lanes but I did it in '07 and made it thru...

DW cries a resounding "NO!" after we did it one time (I had fun, but that might be a clue, too). Drugs would help (and I'm not just talking about the person in the passenger seat).

We've traveled 199 several times in an auto but never towing the Monty. But in spite of the cautious recommendations stated above we would not hesitate to tow the rig on 199. I'm with Bob on this one. It is nice scenic drive. A few curves but the road is certainly very doable. Go for it. Take your time and enjoy. It is not a heavily traveled route.

We have across 199 pulling a 26' TT and I would not hesitate to drive it with the Monty. It does have curves, but is a very scenic drive. Drive at a decent speed and enjoy the trip.

Hi The DW and I lived in Grants Pass for 20 plus years and have used 199 to get to the coast countless times. Just before The State Park area the road gets narrow and the mountains side is close to the road, its curves are tight not bad if you have cars coming on. If you have a logging truck or MH, someting oversized then its very hard to miss hitting a mirror or rear as it comes around. Its doable but it take a steady hand on the wheel and eyes aleart. good luck. Hope this helps.

We took our Monty on 199 from Grants Pass through to the Oregon coast after the 2009 Spring Rally, and while I must admit I was a little white knuckled, if you go slow and keep your focus on the road, you will be fine. Let your bride do the sight seeing, I might mention that that was our first big trip with the Monty, and would consider doing it again, everyone has a different comfort level and driving ability. Its all worth it, the Oregon Coast is spectacular, I might also mention this is from a guy whos Monty is in getting a little fiberglass work done, will save that story for a campfire discussion, lest to say it was a yellow post in Sams Town.

Thanks for all the input! We travel Hwy 20 from 101 to Ft Bragg and also Hwy 128 to the coast on occassion with the Monte. Hwy 199 doesn't sound too much worse than these roads, just a bit longer. I appreciate all your help...just why we enjoy this forum so much!

Thanks

I've been told by several that 199 is a beautiful drive and not that bad a tow. So we'll be doing it after the rally, heading back to the coast to resume our "trip." Today we took 299 from north of Eureka to Redding. It was rainy and some light fog but what a gorgeous drive! I hear 199 and 299 are very similar as far as towing but not having done 199 before I'll have to wait to find out.

Steve,
Both those roads are your kind of routes. You should really enjoy them both.

Good luck and see you soon.

Today, I came from Klamath, CA and took the 199 out of Crescent City through Grants Pass. I called the ride "exciting." Earlene called the ride "scary," but what does she know, right. I mean, just because the white line on her side and the road posts, and the drop off were all in about 12 inches of her is no reason to get scared, right.

The big yellow sign says the King Pin to axle is 30 feet or more it is not advisable to travel the road. Well, I met a couple 18 wheelers and I was driving a 40 foot MH with a TOAD on back. It is doable, very doable, but you do have to be careful and watch your speed. Obey the Yellow Speed Signs, and ever slower in some instances. There were two curves I hit the air horn on as they were blind, and the road is narrow. I don't know if the two Monty's I met today were MOC members or not. They were both on CA-199. It's not the Oregon side that is exciting, it's the California side in my opinion.

I just asked Earlene, "Did you say the ride on 199 was scary?"

She replied, "Horribly scary, frightening scary."

But what does she know.

Edited: Found some pictures. They are all on the California side:

Hmmm! What's that smell?

Wayne,
Thanks! That was funny. And nice pictures. More than enough road! Don't understand what the big deal is about traveling this route!?
Travel safely,
Dennis
