Can you patch a leaking black tank?

I see that almost everyone that has a leak in their black tank - replaces it. Has anyone ever successfully patched their black tank/
If so how did you do it and what product did you use? FYI - my leak is a crack near the drain - bottom of drain and about 2 inches long.

You can patch it with JPWeld. Follow the instructions and it will be better than new.

Rats!!! I read in an RV magazine of some name where a person used some kind of epoxy to fix their tank, but I cannot remember what it was called.... whoa, THAT'S IT. I didn't see DHenry's response.

The dude cleaned the area real good with some solvent that was safe for plastic and "slathered" the JPWELD on it. He said let it cure for a while (follow the directions without compromise) and sent in his suggestion to the magazine after about two months to report the success after 6 weeks of use.

Good luck.

Just saw an ad in the June issue of Trailer Life on page 52, for Dicor DiSeal Water Resistant Sealing Tape. Claims to be excellent for seams, cracks or tears, ideal for use on roofs, sidewalls, HOLDING TANKS and more.

There is also a plastic welding kit available. The guy camped across the road from me told about his experience trying to get a replacement tank and finally bought the welding kit so he could leave home for a warmer climate. It was 4 months and his weld was still holding. He bought it at Harbor Freight.

Be aware that the tanks are ABS compound. Eternabond works well. We had a leak on top of the tank and could not get to it therefore total replacement.

I had my grey tank replaced under extended warranty. The tank price was about $175-$200 shipped but the labor was huge. With new valves it was a $1200 total repair bill. I will try a patch if it happens again.
