Water Pump

What is the best way to make a water pump as quiet as possible.. Ours did not sound to loud the first few times we used it.. Now we both can tell a difference in the noise level..
Any suggestions will be helpful.. We have to use the pump because we are in cold weather here at Chester Frost..It was in the 20's last night and they say it will be again tonight...
Thanks..

We had the same problem. I placed rubber bushings under the pump where it was attached to floor. I also put styrofoam around water pipes where they came in contact with anything. Didn't get rid of all the noise, but at least it doesn't sound like an AK-47 going off.

Thanks for the info.. I will give it a try.. Did not figure out what the sound was.. but you are right.. it does sound like a AK-47 down in the basement in the middle of the night when someone turns the water on...

sgtpp214 is right. Piece of carpet under the pump also helps, but pipe wrap where pipes contact walls/surfaces is most important! It's a challenge, but worth follow up.

You might also try changing the more rigid pipe going into and coming out of the pump with a more flexible type hose. 12 to 18 iinches of rubber hose really cuts down on vibration of the pipes.

There are also more "drastic" measures that have been taken by our members. Some have replaced the pump with a quieter hi-flow pump. Others have put an accumulator in - similar to a pressure tank on a well system. I would start with the isolation material and work from there.

Will give the rubber hose and the pipe wrap a try.. Will be going to Lowes tomorrow in the a.m. to pick up a few things.. I am sure anything that I do will help for sure.
I am able to fix almost anything that needs to be done on the Montana.. So far installed a fireplace .. a flatscreen tv in the bedroom.. took our the 30 lb. tv that was in there.. Why would they put anything in there like that..

Look at this link: Vibration Damper

At the bottom of the page are some damper pads.

In the '80's, a company I worked for had a vibration machine. Nothing more than a steel table about 2 foot square with steel legs. We used it to simulate vibration techniques in the petrochemical industry for refractory products. We purchased 4 of the pads on the page linked above. I could make that table dance and it would stay on the pads.

The first time I used the pump on my Mountaineer I thought the water hammer was going to break the pipes. On my unit the pump is under the bottom kitchen drawer and has very little space around it. I tried everything, rubber under the pump(not much difference, The Surflo sliencer kit (almost got worse) and wrapping all the rigid plumbing I could find with pipe insulation (seemed to help alot). I then took the silencer kit off and put in about a 5 foot piece of flexible tubing and ran it in a big loop and fastened it to the back wall and floor. That had great results. Made the kitchen faucet quite but anytime you used the bathroom sink, shower or toilet it was as bad before. I took all the access panels I could find in the basement passthru and under the fridge in the furnace compartment and wrapped those tubes also. Found that most of the tubes that went through the walls and floors was touching the hot water tubing and the wall and floor surface. Wrapped the rest of the pex tubing and made sure to get the plumbing going to the bathroom fixtures and the toilet and now everything is real quite. I found by mistake that the loudest noise transfer was the plumbing under the floor of the bathroom/shower/toilet area. Be sure to get it all.

I have tried most of the solutions mentioned above, and mine is still noisy. On my 2955RL, the connections for the water pump and associated lines look like a plumber's nightmare and are very hard to wrap and/or isolate, and my next attempt will be a new pump. FWIW, the noise gets louder in cold weather. Good luck!

We had a 298RLS and the pump was in the kitchen under the sink. I tried everything to silence it and got nowhere. I did notice that some of the pipe were in contact with in vertical panel. I put foam rubber around the pipe and it help some but not enough.
