RV'ing Hell

Even though I paid for thre nights I just left the Red Rock camp ground near Island Park Idaho after only 2 nights and glad to leave. With out going into a lot of negative detail I thought this would be better then nothing since all the other CG's near Yellowstone were full. I was really, really wrong. I dont expect the owner to last long, he does not have the temperment to run one and does not have a clue how to treat customers.

What was the problem? We stayed there this year and thought it was great. That is the second time we have stayed there. I talked to the owners this year and they have been there for 12 years?

Gary and Nancy,
You really should post your experiences over on the RV Park Review. And you really should let your fellow MOCers know at least some of the details of what happened. It is really unfair to tease us and then not give any details. Thank you, RVWheels, MOC Admin.

campgroundreviews.com give it unanimous 8/9/10 by user reviews. Appears this was an isolated incident, reasons unknown.

Not being able to find a place near Yellowstone we thought this CG would be better then nothing. I was very, very wrong. Even though they lyed to us about staying three nights the first couple that checked us in were very nice and helpful. It quickly went downhill from there. The minscule lot they put a 40' 5th wheel in was a bad joke. 4' of grass next to us with the neighbors utilities and our picknic table there. Tired from a long day went to bed early but was kept awake by the neighbors party UNDER, not just next to the bedroom slide out. To get the third night we had to move to another site and were promised three times that someone would be there FIRST THING in the morning to guide us to the other "Super" site. Walking the dog the next morning saw the people in the new site were leaving. Waited an hour and no one from the office showed. Not wanting to waste our limited time in Yellowstone went ahead and moved the 5er myself. Just as I am getting it level The guy that was supposed to help me move it comes sliding to a stop on his four wheeler, jumps off and with a real attitude tells me I was supposed to wait for him. He does not like the way I have it lined up and has me go back and forth a few times and tells me now the slide outs will fit (duh) and then roars off on the four wheeler. The hitch of the 5er is sitting at the edge of the drive and the pickup is all the way across the drive sitting down hill on an angle from the site. After unhooking I have 3' to manuver between the 5er and the truck across the drive. After much going forward and backward am able to get the truck off the drive, but now there is no where to park it since he put the end of the 5er at the edge of the drive. Went on about our day and when we got back pulled the truck around the end of the 5er thinking that maybe it would fit in the gravel side lot. It did not. Ran over the end of a 4 x 4 holding the gravel back and broke off about 6 inches of one corner. Having the call of nature went in to handle that and the next thing I know hear BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM on the door. Open it up and the man standing there goes into a tirade with quite an attitude. He is the owner and why didn't I park in back and blaw, blaw, blaw. The owner is talking to a paying customer this way? OK, enough is enough. I got in his face and let him and the rest of the park know what I thought of his lying employees, the ridiculosly small site he had me in at first, the mover that did not show up and when he did leaving me with 3' of space to get my truck out with and I hated his F ing park. Apparently no one had ever talked to him like this before, ha asked me to move my truck to the back of the site and I told him never mind I am leaving and went inside to start packing. Before I could get hooked up he came back and started in again first on me and then yelling at my girlfriend, something about how I talked to him. I told him to not talk to her that way, shut up and let me leave. Well hooking up was absurd!! Luckily the truck across the drive was not there and I had room to get lined up, however my pickup was angled downhill and to the right of the 5er. The owner did not offer to help get it hooked up but sit on his 4 wheeler glaring at me and yelling NO NO NO not that way. After much manuvering I finally managed to get it hooked up, I thought. Pulled forward to check the connection and the 5er fell off the hitch onto the tailgate bending it in a big V. Managed to get it hooked up for real the next time and the OWNER escorted us off his property. If you have a fifth wheeler stay away from this place, I am speculating that it started out as a fishing camp ground for the nearby lake and was designed for much smaller RVs.

After that fiasco I think there needs to be minimum standards for lot size and grade that includes the TV since that has to be reasonably level relative to the 5er. Had that happened I would not of thought we were hooked up at some impossible angle.
Of course honest business practices like not lying to your customers and telling them that you can accomadate them when you can't go with out saying. On another site found where they wanted to put a 40' coach in one of the tt sized lots. They left since it would not fit. Next to us was a 30-40 year old Toyota camper which fit nicely.

We are in Grand Teton RV Resort now with roomy spaces and professional people running it.

Often, others, and circumstances, contribute to problems. These 5'ers and TV are too expensive not to take a lot of personal responsibilities. When pulling into a campground I always try and dictate the minimum standards. If the assigned spot don't look right I don't pull into it. Sorry you had the problem. Jim

I know the horse is out of the barn, but you will want to look into a bed saver from Blue Ox or the pin retainer from Butch. Either one would have saved your TV in this instance.

Thanks for the info on the bed retainer, had never heard of that before.

Unhooked last night and was able to slam the tailgate shut and lock it so we could tour the Tetons today.

Just tried to open the tailgate and of course it is jammed shut, can't get it down. Have a locking Tonneau cover so can't get to it from the other side to force the tailgate open unless I destroy the cover. What next??

Jim,

Excellent advice taken! I figured there would be at least one expensive lesson learned when we bought the RV. Hopefully this is the only one. One thing I have noticed is that at the end of a day of traveling I am tired and just want to get set up and have dinner and get to bed. This should be a sign from now on to take a second look without rushing that the site is acceptable no matter how tired I am.
Thanks for your experience.

That is a terrible day!

I have stayed at some parks I just didn't like but don't think I've been stuck anywhere nor felt like I had to leave before spending the noc. One thing I try to remember is I'm on recreation and there is no hurry for anything. If anything I could spend the noc in Walmart or God forbid a truckstop. There are always options though. I also try not to hook do anything "important" like connecting the rig if I'm angry. That is the time to have a cup of iced tea first. Glad to hear you found a good park to stay in. Tetons are awsome, I hope to get back there soon. Enjoy them.

We where stuck in a campground on our first trip out with our 2955. We call it the campground from heXX. We should have known when the entrance was really tight to make the turn but thought it would open up since we discussed on the phone if they took big rigs and the answer was yes. We never pulled into the site but took us over an hr to get the heck out of there. Not to mention tree limbs and branches scratching our new to us 2955. We learned a valuble lesson that day, a. campground owners don't always tell the truth of lot sizes and b. if it does not look right from the beginning don't go there. We are not Walmart parkers but if need be we will if all else fails. It's always an option in a pinch.

We are safely home from our 6100 mile spur of the moment trip. 3 weeks ago today we had just thrown out several hundred $$ worth of food from being without power for 4 days, the temp was again headed for 103 and I read it was 65° in the Black Hills. I told my SO, start packing we are leaving and left the next afternoon in the general direction of cooler temps out west. Stopped at the Badlands, Mt Rushmore, Black Hills, Devils Tower, Glacier and well since we are so "close" lets see my brother in Washington state, then Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. Lets see, at 7.3 mpg thats.....never mind I do not want to know......

As Pumba would say "Ya gotta put your past behind you" Hope you can take his advice and enjoy future camping.

From bad experiences lessons are learned. It will get better . We have learned to always state the length of our Montana when making reservations.. we say
We want a full hookup, 50 amps, We are a 40 foot 5th wheel, 4 slides and our total length truck and Rv is 54 feet.Do you have a spot for us.When we get there one of us will walk to the site and check it out.A couple of times it did not look good and we left.

We find that the mistakes are made when we are in a hurry so we are never in a hurry anymore. Plan ahead, take your time, slow down.
On our first road trip our 3400 went up in smoke...

One thing I try and do when looking at a new to us CG is look them up on Bing Maps and try and zoom in close enough to see the sites. Doesn't always work, but can give you a rough idea of site size and location of trees. Also, most CGs will take you to the site on a Golf Cart so you can check it out before getting stuck in a spot designed for a tent or pop-up.

I'm sorry to hear you had problems at Red Rock. Back in 2006 we spent a month there and had nothing but good experiences. Very friendly and helpful staff and owner. The park was definitely busy but that area has a very small windows of good weather and everyone wants to go there during that time. I wouldn't try the area without reservations, at least during the warm weather season.

Again, I'm sorry your experience was not good. We had a great time in that park. We enjoyed the solitude, the lack of traffic noise, etc. Hopefully your situation is an isolated one and others won't have the same problems.
