Planning to move on up to a FW
I have a 2005 Dodge 2500 diesel....
I currently tow a 29ft travel trailer and don't know its back there.
Just join this group - we are looking at a Montana FW for full-timing within a year or two.
Notice that most of you have 3500/F350 or larger....
I had not planned to replace the truck...will I be able to handle the FW with this truck ??
Thanks

Which Montana are you looking at? They range in length from 33' to 39', empty hitch weights from 1,700 to over 2,200, and GVWR from something over 13,000 to well over 15,000.

Since there is not dealer in the DFW area... we have not walked thru the different models but from internet searching I believe we want to stay below 36 ft.
We need to plan a trip north to Oklahoma to look.

A lot of us here tow our 5er's with 3/4 ton trucks. The diesel gives you plenty of power you just have to watch the size trailer you get doesn't exceed the weight rating for your truck.

Welcome, Joe. Look at the Tire and Loading Information sticker on the left side of the frame on your truck. It will give you the cargo capacity for that truck to the nearest one pound. Compare that number to the LOADED pin weight of the Montana model you like, and add to it the weight of everything else you put in the truck...hitch, people, tools, cargo, etc. Your diesel with "pull" any Montana, the weak link with 3/4 ton trucks is the ability to carry the heavy pin weight and remain with in the manufacturer's specs. I have a 3400RL and the total of everything in my truck is 3,300 to 3,500 lbs...around 1,000 lbs over the capacity of a 3/4 ton.

Joe, I sent you a pm. I tow my 2005 Mountaineer 348 RLS,with ease. It's a couple thousand lbs lighter than the big Montanas. I did extensive research and discovered that the only difference between the 3/4 HD CTD and the 1 ton SRW is one leaf in the spring pack. Axle, brakes, tires etc are idential. I added the leaf and also added air bags to level the load. I'm very comfortable with my combo. Before adding the leaf I needed 45 psi in my air bag to get level, now I only need 20 psi to get level. I have no problem slowing or stopping. I tow in tow haul at all times and down shift on steep downhills. My f/w weighs 10250 dry and 12100 loaded for vacation. I'm a little over on pin weight but under on rear axle weight, tire rating, and GCWR
